January 21st Journal

Hello to everyone. Since my last journal, I started a new term at UCLA. I'm taking three classes this semester: Ethnomusicology, Biology 30 (it's about Cancer), and Speech I. Speaking of UCLA, on January 12, I watched the UCLA gymnastics team take on the University of Georgia at Pauley Pavillion in Los Angeles. The team performed very well, but lost. After the competition, I performed an exhibition with some of my teammates from the World Gold Gymnastic Tour.

I recently saw my good friend Mary Lou Retton. I went to her house in Houston to take some pictures for the Children's Miracle Network magazine. Along with the Special Olympics, the Children's Miracle Network is a very important charity to me. Mary Lou has a beautiful home, and a beautiful baby girl named Shayla. Whenever we get together, we talk about old times and trade stories about training under Bela, and some of the crazy diets we've been on while in training.

Mary Lou and I will also be featured along with many other gymnasts past and present in a new book on gymnastics. Among those featured will be Cathy Rigby, Bart Conner, Nadia Comaneci, and Krassmir Dunev. Krassmir is a Bulgarian gymnast who won a silver medal in the High Bar at the 1996 Atlanta Games. I took some pictures with him last week at Venice Beach. I have to say, he is one good looking guy!

I had my first Ice Capades shows of 1997 last week. It was great to see all the tour participants again. We had two shows last week in Detroit, and played to full houses both nights. The Ice Capades shows are a lot of fun for me, the routines are not quite as rigid as some of my gymnastics ones, there's a lot of dancing involved, and I also get to wear lots of different costumes. On the tour I'm doing some floor exercises, and also a routine on the beam.

Have any of you seen the movie The English Patient? I just saw it with my best friend Sunshine. I thought it was pretty good, its a little long, but its a very well made film. I'm really looking forward to this weekend, because I'm going to New Orleans for the Super Bowl. It should be a great game, but I'm also excited for my trip down south because I'll get a chance to see my brother. He's a law student at Tulane University. I'll let you all know how my trip went in my next journal

I'll talk to you soon.
