School
Hello to everyone. I'm using this as an opportunity to take a study break. We have mid-terms next week, and I've got a lot of studying to do. As I mentioned in my last journal I'm taking three classes this semester. My favorite so far is Ethnomusicology. The course is about Jazz, a type of music that I don't know very much about. The course is very interesting, and I feel like I'm learning a lot. I think my hardest class will be Speech. We have to give 10 minute speeches on a variety of topics in front of the class. I've given a lot of interviews on gymnastics, but I've never really done this kind of public speaking. I think this course will be very helpful for me in the long term, but right now I'm a little nervous.
New Orleans
I had a great time down in New Orleans. As I mentioned earlier, my brother Kevin goes to Tulane Law School. We got to spend a lot of time together, and I got a chance to see his new apartment. I walked around the French Quarter with Kevin and his girlfriend for awhile, and we went out to dinner at a great restaurant called Irene's. I went to a great Super Bowl Party on Saturday, that was thrown in part by Athlete Direct. The party was a lot of fun, and I got to see a lot of great athletes, including Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith, and Ivan Rodriguez. I also met two of the stars of the movie "Jerry McGuire," Jerry O'Connell, and Cuba Gooding Jr.
This Week
On Thursday, I'm going to see Cirque du Soleil. Its kind of hard to describe, its like the circus, but with lots of twist. The performers include acrobats, jugglers, clowns, and stilt walkers. I'm really looking forward to the show. On Friday, my parents are coming to visit me. We're going to Toronto on Saturday for the opening of the 1997 Special Olympics Winter Games. The games last from February 1-8, and there will be over 2,000 athletes from more than 75 countries, along with more than 6,000 volunteers on hand to help out. This is one of my favorite charities, so I'm sure it will be great experience.
