"[Oz] is probably the person most responsible for the Muppets being funny" Jim Henson on Oz.
Frank Oz was born in Hereford, England in 1944. He emigrated to the United States at the age of five with his parents who were accomplished amateur puppeteers. Jim Henson saw Oz at a puppeteers' convention in California where he was impressed with Oz's ability. Henson wanted to hire him right away but had to wait until Oz had graduated from High School. Oz did join the Muppets in 1963, and since then has become one of the greatest puppeteers of our time as well as a superb comedy director (films such as Little Shop of Horrors and the recent hit In N' Out). "From the beginning Frank [Oz] was a superb manipulator. He could make a puppet do anything, but he was completely unable to do voices. It was years before he would even try. In fact, it reached the point where I despaired of him ever doing voices..." Jim Henson. |

According to Christopher Finch Frank Oz was "the most serious of the muppet performers. He takes nothing for granted, questions everything, seems always ready to throw out a challenge if he feels there is some way in which the show can be improved/...he is critical of his own work/…generally direct and succinct/...Frank Oz's humor is a sudden release of energy, a surge of comic inventiveness that is in direct proportion to his habitual seriousness." |
