Kathryn looked through her mail and threw in on the kitchen table. All junk mail and bills that Valerie never paid. "Hey Val…" Kathryn walked to her room to see her changing. "Where are you going?" "I was going to grab us some sandwiches or something," she said buttoning her shirt and putting on her sandals. "I'll be back soon okay?" "Can you get a lot of meat on it? I'm really in the mood," Kathryn said as Valerie shut the door. Kathryn shrugged and went to the fridge.
Instead of getting her usual date dumped ice cream, she took out a left over cheeseburger. She threw the bun and the cheese away and ate the burger, filling her stomach as she walked back to her room. She felt so different, so…strange. She sat down on her bed as the lights hurt her eyes. She turned them off and sat in the darkness, watching the second hand on her wall clock pass by.
7:27 p.m. Miami, Florida - Kathryn's Apartment
Nick turned off his car and stared at the apartment complex. He closed his eyes as he saw her staring at her wall clock, chewing on something. He shook his head and got out of his car and walked up the steps to the number from the letters he read. He looked in the window and saw her sitting in the darkness, her eyes glowing red. "Oh shit," he whispered. He walked into her apartment and shut the door, walking to her room. "Kathryn?" Nick asked as she jumped up, running to the other side of the room. "How did you find me?" She begged to know. "I can see you through my eyes," he explained as a tear came down her face. "Stay away from me," she begged as he saddened. "I'll talk to Mark and see what happened to me but I don't know what came over me Kathryn! I love you…" as soon as he said that a person flew into the window as jumped onto the ground. "Garry what are you doing?"
"Mark sent me to see if you did your duty buddy," Garry said looking over at Kathryn. She was in a ball on the floor in the corner of her room shaking. "I see you haven't," Garry said with a laugh. He walked over to her, his boots making loud noise on the floor scaring Kathryn every move he made. "Do you want to be one of us?" "No," she said shaking her head. "Garry cut it out," Nick said angrily. "Do you want to die?" "No," Kathryn whispered sadly, tears streaming down her face. Garry started laughing as he kneeled down to her. "Well it's one of the other baby, choose your fate," Garry said laughing. He looked at her neck and turned to Nick. "I see you attempted to kill her?" "No," Nick said shaking his head. "Yes you did," Kathryn said angrily. "It was an accident!" Nick said defensively. "Oh okay so a girl is unconscious and she's automatically able to be bitten on accident?" "I couldn't help it! I have cravings dammit!" "YOU TWO CAN IT!" Garry said with a yell. "Sound like you're married," he said shaking his head. "I'm sorry Kathryn, time to choose," Garry shrugged. "She doesn't have to do anything Garry," Nick said angrily. "Nick whatever Mark says goes, so she's toast!" Garry said with a sadistic smile. "So what will it be Kathryn? Immortality or death?" "Garry if you touch her I'll…" "You'll what? KILL ME?" He said in laughter. "Oh look at this," Garry said. He touched her blonde hair, brushing it slowly. "I'm touching her Nick, what are you gonna do?" "Stop it," Kathryn whispered. "Sorry, you're hair is so long and beautiful, right Nicky boy?" Garry said picking Kathryn up as she screamed. Garry held her in his arms, taking the bandage off her neck. "Oh look, Nick tried to kill you! How can THAT be love Kathryn? I mean you're in love with something that tried to kill you!" Garry said turning to Nick. "Hey Nick, look at it, finish the job buddy," Garry said pushing on the holes as she screamed in pain. "Stop," Nick said as his eyes started to glow. "I can always snap her neck like a twig," Garry said as in a flash Nick was at his throat, Kathryn falling to the ground.
They wrestled on the ground as Kathryn stared at them. Nick's eyes were bright green, Garry laughing contently. Nick threw him to the wall, knocking him unconscious, Kathryn looked at Nick as his eyes stopped glowing, and his fangs disappeared. "Are you okay?" Nick asked as she nodded. He got up and walked over to Garry and looked at him, he kicked his boots to see if he was going to move and sighed. "He's out cold." He walked over to Kathryn, her shaking body on the floor, crying as hard as her eyes could and her hands trembling. "Come on, we have to get out of here," Nick said as she fell on him. He didn't know what to do; he'd never cared or had feelings of being scared. She wrapped her arms around him as he held her, her body shaking and warm to the touch. He looked at the two holes he had created and let her go. "We have to go now," he said looking at her beautiful gleamy eyes. He picked her up and carried her down to the car, hoping she would be okay.
"Nick Carter, never thought I'd see you with a mortal," Nick turned to see A.J., his fangs showing. "When did you become one?" Nick asked in shock. He set Kathryn in the car and shut the passenger's door. "Not long ago…yesterday actually. Remember that girl you killed? Jeanette? She didn't die," A.J. explained as Nick sighed. "Mark has helped me with everything, telling me about you, how long you've been one, and how you love and mortal? Is this she?" A.J. asked pointing to Kathryn looking at A.J. in the car. "Yes…are you after her too?" Nick asked. "I'd hate to kill one of my best friends." "No, I've come to warn you about them. Mark is planning tons of them after you," A.J. said as Nick nodded. "I wouldn't doubt that." "You were always a good friend, even if you killed all my girls at the club," A.J. said as Nick laughed. "Go, get out of here. I'll tell them I saw you somewhere else," A.J. said as Nick nodded. "Thanks bro," Nick said clapping his hand. "I owe you again." "Nah, this one's free," A.J. said walking over to Kathryn. She jumped at his presence.
"I'm A.J., I'm a friend of Nick's," A.J. said hoping she'd calm down. "Nick if you don't help her she'll go into shock, she's trembling to death." "Is that why? I…I didn't understand," Nick said lowering his head. "It's okay, you were young when it happened to you. She's scared, she's shaking because of everything that's happening, you should go somewhere and calm her down," A.J. said as Nick nodded. "How do I do that?" Nick asked puzzled. "Hug her, kiss her, ya know, comfort her," A.J. said with a laugh. "Comfort? As in make her feel better?" "Yes!" A.J. said with a laugh. "Come, you can stay at the club," he said as Nick smiled.
When they got there, Nick took Kathryn's hand as A.J. led them to the back. "Nice place," Nick said with a laugh. "The pimp house." "Ha ha, sit her down over here," A.J. said pointing to the zebra striped couch. Nick laid her down and looked into her eyes. "She's showing signs of being on of us A.J.," Nick said looking over at him. "Like what?" "The eyes glowing. I saw her eyes glowing today, and she was eating meat," Nick said as A.J. shrugged. "So?" "Human's eyes don't glow! You know that as much as anybody," Nick said sitting down on the couch with Kathryn's legs on his lap. "Well you didn't feed her your blood so she can't turn into one, maybe she's like half?" A.J. said as Nick shrugged. "I would ask Mark but we're trying to stay away from him at the moment," Nick said as A.J. laughed. "Well what are you going to do with her? She can't talk she's in shock?" "I don't know, why don't you help her? I don't know how," Nick said as he looked at her sadly. "Nick, just tell her everything's going to be okay, make her feel," A.J. said as Nick sighed. He kneeled down to her face and stroked her hair. "It's okay, everything will be okay," he whispered in her ear, kissing her lips softly. He didn't feel her kiss him back; she was like a rock.
"Kathryn I love you, everything's going to be fine," he said as he saw her shake her head. "It will, I promise." "Why don't you just turn her? She'll forget everything that's making her like this, and she said she wanted to be one right?" "She doesn't know what she's thinking. She's acting on her love not her brain," Nick said as he brushed her hair. "Well I'll do it for you…" "No," Nick said firmly. "If anyone does it at all, it would be me." "Whatever you say boss. Hey I'm going to get someone, want me to get you one too?" "Yeah, I haven't eaten tonight," Nick said nodding. "Be right back," he said shutting the door. Nick didn't know how to make her talk. "Kathryn, do you want to be a vampire?" Her eyes looked up to him. "You want to?" She moved her lips as he inched closer to her face. "I want to be with you," her tiny voice said as he looked back at her. "I don't want to do this, but you want it," he said sadly. He looked at the puncture wounds in her neck and bit them again as she moaned. He drank as his vampire eyes glowed, he loved her blood.
He stopped and looked at her. Her eyes halfway closed as she lay close to death. He looked for something to cut himself with, finding a pocketknife on A.J.'s kitchen counter. He sighed and cut his wrist as the violet blood came pouring out. He looked at her and sighed. "Drink it," he said putting his wrist to her mouth. She started drinking as her eyes glowed, she put her two hands around her arm and sucked hard as he clenched his fist in pain. She let go and started screaming, her body started changing as A.J. came into the room. "You did it!" A.J. said as the girls stood in shock at Kathryn's screaming. She stopped and closed her eyes, laying still as Nick looked at her with uncertainty.
