Hymenochirus boettgeri
My Deceased pal "GoRf" and my new froggy "Zen" are African Dwarf Frogs.
Price - African Dwarf frogs are very cheap to buy and are usualy priced around $3.99.
Food - African Dwarf Frogs are so little that they don't eat live food. If you have ever owned a Beta fish and you kept the food you gave it you wont even have to go buy food for your little frog 'cause African Dwarf Frogs eat freeze dried bloodworms. The same food as Beta fish. I bought a little jar of the stuff about 7 months ago and I was feeding two Beta fish and my little Dwarf frog and I havent even made a dent in it yet. When I bought my frog the people at the pet store told me to buy a jar of frog bites to feed it so I did just incase my froggy didn't like the blood worms and my frog wouldn't even touch the frog bites. They sink to the bottom of the tank and he wouldn't eat them. I also wouldn't suggest this kind of food (although I feed it to my newts) because if the frog wont eat it in a day t starts to grow bacteria on it and this is not healthy to have in the water.
Living Enviroment - African dwarf frogs are sooo tiny that a glass aquarium is not necessary. A fish bowl is fine for the froggies as long as it has a lid so the froggy can't jump out. Make sure to put places in the tank or fish bowl for the frog to hide and other than that set up your bowl or tank just as you would if it was a set up for fish. They live entirely under the water only coming up every once and a while for air. make sure to filter your tank and clean it once a week.
Friends for your Dwarf Frog? - Dwarf Frogs get along extreamly well with others Dwarf frogs and you can keep as many of them together as you want. (Making sure that the more Frogs you have the bigger you bowl or tank is) Dwarf frogs also get along with some species of fish. I have read in on many web pages that you can keep a single Beta fish in with your Dwarf Frogs which is something that you should never do! Beta fish are very aggressive fish and if they are put in the same tank with anything they will attack it! A great fish to house with your Dwarf Frogs is the Neon Tetra. They are very friendly fish and will get aong well with your froggies. Goldfish are semi agressive fish so if you are looking to introduce some gold fish into your frogs tank keep them in a seperate bowl for several days and see how the fish react to each other. If they show any signs of aggression do not put them in with the frog. Many times the Goldfish will be quite friendly towards your frog but it is always better safe then sorry.
Disposition - Dwarf Frogs are very, very active frogs and great frogs for begginers and little children. They are very easy to take care of and should last quite a long time if given the proper care. Don't worry if your frog stays at the bottom of the tank for a long time, they can hold their breath for quite a while. When the frogs are being lazy they will float to the top and stay there so that they don't have to go far for air. If your froggy is floating on the top of the water for a long time such as a whole day, poke him and if he doesn't swim away to the bottom of the tank he might be sick. There is almost nothing that you can do if your frog is sick except remove all the other animals from the tank and wash it then put them back in but put your sick froggy in a seperate tank untill it dies or goes back to it's old self.
