The following is a transcript from the "Hitline USA" show, which aired live on
2/6/94--its 7th birthday. This is the part of the show when I talked to Richard. The show's
host is Elvis Durant. (What a coincidence with the name! : )
Elvis -- We have another call. Melissa, from Evansville,
Indiana. Are you there, Melissa?
Missy -- Yes, I am.
R.M. -- Hi, Melissa.
Elvis -- You're on with Richard Marx.
Missy -- Hi!
R.M. -- How're you doing?
Missy -- Oh, I'm fine, how are you?
R.M. -- I'm good.
Missy -- First, I want to tell you I love your voice...
R.M. -- Thank you.
Missy -- ...and I hope that you'll be coming to Evansville
soon.
R.M. -- Well, I have before, and I would love to come back.
It's in my neck of the woods. You know, I'm from
Chicago, so you're sort of a neighbor.
Missy -- OK, that'd be great.
R.M. -- Did you have a question?
Missy -- My question is, besides "Now and Forever" from "The
Getaway," what other songs might we know that you've
written for movies?
R.M. -- Good question. Well, I wrote a song in the movie
"No Way Out" called "Say It"... I wrote the love
theme to "Tequila Sunrise" that was done by Ann
Wilson and Robin Zander called "Surrender to Me"...
I wrote a song in "St. Elmo's Fire," with David
Foster, the producer... And I even wrote a song in
"Hardbodies 2" that a lot of people don't know
about, called "Everybody Wants a Hardbody." This is
when I didn't have a record deal and I was
struggling to pay the rent... um, yes. So...
Elvis -- Now wait a minute... now I guess that would qualify
as your disco record.
(*--Earlier in the show, they talked about Bryan
Adams having a disco record.)
R.M. -- Well, no, it's a rock'n'roll song. But...
Elvis -- Oh, Richard, I'm sure there was a mix-up... come on.
R.M. -- And then I sang a song that I didn't write, years
ago, before I had a deal, in the movie "Nothing in
Common" with Tom Hanks, called "Burning of the
Heart," I think it was called. So I've done a lot
of movie stuff, but this new movie, "The Getaway,"
that's coming out with "Now and Forever" is the most
satisfying, because I think it really works in the
movie. And the movie's great. And Kim Basinger is
not an ugly person, ladies and gentlemen.
Elvis -- Well, no, we didn't say she was!
R.M. -- No. And Alec Baldwin's great in the movie too. I'm
a big fan of his.
