VOICE SQUAD
by Jose A. Martinez
(from TV Guide August 9-15, 1997)

When Men in Black: The Series debuts on the WB this fall, it won't feature Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, the stars of the blockbuster film on which the cartoon is based. Actor Ed O'Ross ("Lethal Weapon") will voice Kay (the role played by Jones in the movie). "I try to play Kay as subtle and flat as possible, in a Jack Webb sort of way," he says.

But Jennifer Lien (soon to depart her role as Kes on UPN's Star Trek: Voyager) will add color to Men in Black, as Elle, a feisty research assistant. "When you hear this gorgeous, sexy voice come out of her, you just fall in love with her," O'Ross says. "Keith Diamond [who voices Smith's role, Jay] and I have fun with her in rehearsals; we say 'Hi, Jennifer,' in our best husky voices, and she cracks up."

The hardest part for the actors, says executive producer Richard Raynis, is pronouncing the names of the aliens. "We're just trying to work our own names into the show," he adds with a laugh. "There's even a 'Raynisian' in episode two."

FUN-FILLED ACTION SERIES BASED ON HIGHLY ANTICIPATED FILM "MEN IN BLACK" COMES TO KIDS' WB! OCTOBER 1997

(March 5, 1997--Burbank, CA)-- "Men in Black," one of this summer's most anticipated major motion pictures produced by Columbia Pictures and Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, becomes an animated television series debuting on Kids' WB! in October 1997, it was announced today by Jean MacCurdy, head of programming for Kids' WB!, and Sander Schwartz, senior vice president, children's programming, Columbia TriStar Television.

The addition of "Men in Black" gives Kids' WB!'s line-up two animated series based on what are expected to be two of the biggest action/adventure films of the summer: "Batman and Robin" from Warner Bros. and "Men in Black." Both action-packed animated series are slated to premiere on the heels of the feature film releases ("Men in Black" premieres July 2, 1997, "Batman and Robin" premieres June 20, 1997).

The "Men in Black" feature film (which stars Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith) as well as the animated series are based on Malibu Comics' comic book series of the same name created by world-renowned comic book writer Lowell Cunningham.

The animated series, "Men in Black" (MiB) is about a secret governmental organization made up of men dedicated to providing inter-galactic immigration services for earth-bound alien beings. This team of covert operatives monitors alien activities on earth while keeping the aliens existence a secret. When evil aliens commit crimes it's up to the MiB to keep the peace with their high-tech gadgetry and unearthly instincts.

"We're extremely excited to add 'Men in Black' to our line-up," said MacCurdy. "The unique blend of action, adventure and comedy found in this series, along with the name recognition benefit from the feature film and the comic book, should provide a surefire recipe to draw young people to Kids' WB!"

"We're confident that 'Men in Black' can become a franchise property for our studio," noted Schwartz. "Debuting on the heels of an intensive and wide-ranging motion picture campaign, the series will benefit from extraordinarily high awareness levels in all key demographics."

Andy Kaplan, executive vice president, Columbia TriStar Television Group added, "As a studio committed to successfully developing projects from our film pipeline, we are delighted that 'Men in Black' will join the popular, quality animation on The WB."

"Men in Black," the animated series, will be produced by the production team of Richard Raynis (executive producer), Jeff Kline (supervising producer) and Duane Capizzi (producer/story editor). Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald also serve as executive producers. The series is a production of Columbia TriStar Television and is being produced for Kids' WB!, The WB Television Network's children's programming service.
