Thursday, July 23, 1998 9:47 AM Bruce and Demi Get Spicy Bruce Willis and Demi Moore continue to put up a united front for their kids, despite their well-publicized separation. The parents of Rumer, 9, Scout, 6, and Tallulah, 4, made up for saddling the girls with those ill-conceived monikers by taking them to see the Spice Girls Wednesday night, says the Associated Press. And the three lucky little ladies are learning early that fame has many privileges. The three girls chatted backstage with the now four-member "Girl Power" bubblegum group. "They seemed to have a really great time," says a spokesman for the concert venue. No word on whether Posh, Sporty, Scary, or Baby Spice passed on any kernels of wisdom for the struggling couple. Meanwhile, in other Willis-Moore news—no, they haven't announced whether they're preparing to divorce, but Bruce and Demi do have their lawyers working overtime. The New York Daily News reports that the dueling lawsuits between the on-the-outs couple and their former nanny are heating up. You'll recall that Kim Tannahill sued the couple last February, saying she was "shamelessly exploited and abused" while working in the Moore-Willis household. She's asking for $900,000 for her claims of, among other things, assault, fraud, deceit, stalking, and our personal favorite, being "literally whisked away and required to engage in extensive travel throughout the United States and the world." Bruce and Demi countersued, claiming defamation, breach of confidentiality, and misappropriation of funds. They asked that the trial be held in Idaho, where they have a residence, and that their suit be heard before Tannahill's. The stars got their wish, but in court paper's filed last week, the nanny's attorneys claim that the celebrity twosome is using the Idaho trial "to bludgeon Miss Tannahill into submission and silence." They claim Bruce and Demi were able to file their suit first by tricking the ex-employee, who wanted the trial in Los Angeles, into thinking they could reach an out-of-court settlement. An L.A. judge today turned down Tannahill's request to have the matter decided in California. Moore's attorneys called Tannahill's latest allegations "a new work of horror fiction, scurrilous, and false."

Monday, July 13, 1998 8:57 AM Mom Defends Liv Tyler's Reputation The breakup of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore has led to endless speculation about what exactly caused the split. The tabloids have, of course, speculated that the Die Hard star was tomcatting around, and this week's National Enquirer is no exception. This week's issue has a front-page picture of the not-so-happy couple, along with Bruce's Armageddon co-star Liv Tyler. The headline? "Beauty Who Broke Up Bruce & Demi." The Enquirer not-too-subtly hints that it was the dark-haired beauty who was responsible for the end of the high-profile Hollywood marriage. But Liv's mom says that is so much bull. Bebe Buell, Liv's former manager and infamous rock and roll groupie, tells gossip maven Liz Smith that the story is "ridiculous. A joke. And it is so unfair to Liv and her boyfriend of three years, Joaquin Phoenix. It in unfair to Bruce as well." Says the irate mom, "I'm here to tell you [Bruce] never laid a finger on Liv in any inappropriate way. He respected the fact that she was committed to Joaquin, and I really don't think he's interested in seducing children anyway." "Besides," adds Buell, "Liv's father [Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler, whose band contributed several songs to the film's soundtrack] was at the premiere in Florida, and if he had even thought there was anything going on, he would have kicked Bruce's ass." And as far as those rumors about the more mature Demi going ballistic when Bruce brought his young, nubile co-star to their Idaho home? "You mean Liv and Ben Affleck and several other cast members?" corrects Buell. "Bruce flew a lot of people up to his house all the time. I never saw negativity from Demi, nor did Liv ever sense any bad vibes." Buell tells Smith that she had hoped to protect her daughter from the seamier side of show business at least for a little longer. "I tell her not to read the trash, and to try and take it with a grain of salt," she says. "You're a movie star now, this is part of it, I say. But inside, I'm hurting. And I know she is too."

Monday, August 3, 1998 11:23 AM Duchovny Disses Anderson David Duchovny is letting his mouth run wild while promoting The X-Files: Fight the Future overseas. In an interview published Friday in London's Guardian, the normally laconic actor gets into a genuine tizzy when discussing his co-star Gillian Anderson and her past publicized complaints about the discrepancies in their paychecks. "The truth is in Hollywood you make as much money as you can get. If she's making less money than me, she should blame her agent, or her lawyer, or herself. She shouldn't blame the fact that she's a woman, or me," he vents to the paper. "Demi Moore gets paid more than me, and I work just as hard as her. Is it because she's a woman, is it because she has breasts? I resented the implication that I'm making more money than I deserve. I thought it showed a lack of class." Ouch. But Duchovny hadn't yet said his piece, and the 38-year-old husband of Téa Leoni just barely skirts political incorrectness with this diatribe: "The other thing that pisses me off is when women want not just equality but separate but equal. Men and women are two very different things. They should be treated by society with the same laws, get paid the same amount for the same job and all that stuff, but to say we're not different is just bulls--t." And what of the on-screen relationship between agents Mulder and Scully? "Even with the show, people say, 'Why is Scully in danger; why must Mulder save her?' It's ridiculous! Somebody has to be in jeopardy and someone has to save them," exclaims Duchovny. "Mulder has lost every fistfight he's had on The X-Files. Scully has won almost every one…Gillian is 5-foot 2; I'm 6-foot. The odds are that I'd probably win more. However, because she's a woman, Scully can't lose a fistfight. You become tyrannized by this notion that women must not only be treated equally but they must never fail. It's crap to me, and it makes for bad drama." Duchovny also has some strong opinions about sexual harassment in America. "America is being tyrannized by sexual bias suits," he says. "You can't say to somebody, 'If you don't f--- me, I'm going to fire you." But an employer saying one time, 'Gee, that girl has nice tits'…I shouldn't have to lose my business because of that. If you are offended by it, you can say so. But people's lives are being ruined, and I believe that the cause of feminism is actually being set back." Duchovny may be speaking of a situation close to home. For those who don't remember, Chris Carter, the brains behind The X-Files, still faces a sexual harassment suit brought by a female employee in 1996. In her suit, former script supervisor Judith Fairly claims the creator and exec producer of the paranormal show had a "penchant for sexual dialogue," gave her unwanted neck rubs, offered to impregnate her, and fondled other female staffers. Carter has vigorously denied the accusations, and is reportedly close to settling out of court. Of his offscreen relationship with Anderson, Duchovny maintains his long-standing party line. "We work long hours together, many months out of the year. We're both still alive, and that's a testament to a successful relationship. I trust her to show up and be prepared and not waste my time, and she trusts me to do the same. We don't socialize." And of his obvious disdain for the rigors of a weekly TV series, even one that has brought him fame and fortune, Duchovny says, "If I could make my choice right now, I wouldn't do it. But I made a commitment. What I want is not important. I signed a piece of paper, I'm a professional artist, and I'll do the best I can.… I feel trapped by the job, not the character."

WILLIS, MOORE ENDING 10-YEAR MARRIAGE Tribune News Services June 25, 1998 LOS ANGELES -- Bruce Willis and Demi Moore are ending their decadelong marriage, Moore's publicist said Wednesday. Publicist Pat Kingsley refused to elaborate on whether it was a separation or a divorce. She could not answer questions about the custody of the couple's three daughters. Willis and Moore were married Nov. 21, 1987. Willis publicist Paul Bloch said Wednesday the statement was true, but he had no further details. There was no divorce filing in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday. Willis stars in the summer movie "Armageddon" and has been featured in "Pulp Fiction" and the "Die Hard" films. Moore starred in "Ghost," "Indecent Proposal" and "Striptease."

Tuesday, July 7, 1998 8:54 AM Bruce Shares Demi's Pain In Hollywood, breakups between power couples can get downright nasty, but it looks like Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, for all the rumors flying around about their split, are determined to keep things amicable. USA Today reports Willis joined his estranged wife in New Mexico over the weekend to lend his support as she deals with the death of her mother. Virginia Guynes, 54, died of cancer and a brain tumor on July 2 at her home in Farmington, N.M. For the past several years, Demi had little contact with her troubled mother, who had a long criminal record and a history of substance abuse problems. But the two reconciled late last year when Moore learned of her mother's illness. The actress, along with her three daughters, has spent the last three months in Farmington taking care of Guynes and was by her side when she died. According to the paper, Willis joined Moore and his daughters in New Mexico shortly after making a surprise appearance at the Armageddon premiere early last week in Florida. He was expected to attend the small, very private (relatives only) funeral for Guynes Monday night. Bruce and Demi, married for 10 years, which in Hollywood terms qualifies you for a Golden Anniversary, surprised many by announcing two weeks ago that they were calling it quits.

Bruce & Demi: Behind the Split by Joal Ryan June 25, 1998, 7:55 a.m. PT Like Greta Garbo, Bruce Willis wants to be alone. "...I would just like to be on my own for a little while," the Die Hard star said, in a statement, following the long-rumored, but still-bombshell announcement that he and super-couple partner Demi Moore were splitsville after 10 years of marriage. The couple confirmed the break-up late Wednesday in a brief press release that was disappointingly (for Enquiring minds) bereft of details. The hand-out said Bruce and Demi were "ending" their union. And that was about it. (Well, Willis did add, in his personal statement, that it was a "very sad day." There was no special word from Moore.) Please, people, please. What about the specifics? As in: (1) Why? (2) Does "ending" mean divorce or a separation?; (3) What about the kids--Rumer, 9, Scout, 6, and Tallulah, 4?; (4) And, hey, what about Planet Hollywood? With the light of a new day, answers have become (only) slightly easier to find: Answer (1): The chief theory being espoused by so-called friends of Bruce and Demi is that the globe-trotting power duo, with homes in Idaho and Malibu, and movie-set trailers the world over, spent too much time apart. "They were leading different lives," a source tells the New York Post. The other consensus opinion is that the marriage has been on life support for a while. The New York Daily News says Mr. Hudson Hawk and Ms. G.I. Jane reportedly were living apart in recent months. The announcement of the split was said to be delayed until summer--and until summer vacation--to mitigate the schoolyard-teasing factor for the couple's three kids. Supermarket tabloids have been predicting this blow-up for more than a year. Just last March, the two got an Australian mag to apologize for reporting that their marriage was on the endangered list. And last year the couple sued the Star for a similar story. Answer (2): As to the matter of divorce or separation, don't know. The publicist didn't say, and the paper trail is inconclusive. No divorce filings are on record--at least in Los Angeles. A source tells the Daily News that it wouldn't be surprising to see the Willis-Moore split settled in Idaho, where they live on a 40-acre expanse. Another friend speculates in the newspaper that the couple hung on to marriage, in part, because "they didn't want to deal with the [financial] numbers" of divorce. While Moore is a top-paid actress (getting a reported $12 million for Striptease), Willis is an even bigger top-paid actor--a member of Hollywood's exclusive $20 million club. "...Bruce especially," the friend tells the Daily News. "...He doesn't want to part with a lot of money." Answer (3): Afraid the custody issue is as murky as everything else. But on this positive note, a source tells the Daily News that the couple intends to go about their split "amicably." And on this ominous note, the source adds: "But that remains to be seen." Answer (4): Bruce and Demi are shareholders in Planet Hollywood. The state of this, and other joint business holdings, are, again, unclear. But since the theme-restaurant chain also has the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Whoopi Goldberg to keep its axis spinning, we're guessing that your french fries will be okay at lunch today. *** Willis, 43, and Moore, 35, married on November 21, 1987, in Las Vegas. Moore's Brat Pack alum, Ally Sheedy, played a wedding guest. It was his first marriage; her second. They costarred together once on screen: in 1991's Mortal Thoughts. In 1996, they provided voices for the animated comedy, Beavis and Butt-head Do America. Willis next will be seen in the now aptly titled disaster movie, Armageddon.
