"This is great, just great!" Jessica exclaimed. According to her watch, they have spent the last half hour looking for a door that didn't seem to exist! At first Jessica was mad, but now, she couldn't help but be scared. If they couldn't find this door, they might be trapped here. . . forever! No more mom, no more dad, no more Hollywood, no more Steven . . . well maybe there is a bright side to this. But right about now, she wouldn't mind hearing one of Steven's lame jokes. We're all probably going to starve to death, Jessica thought.
"We're all probably going to starve to death!" Jessica repeated her thought.
"Don't worry, Jessica," Elizabeth ensured her. "We're going to get out of here."
But Jessica could tell that her twin wasn't too certain.
"Can't agree with you on this one Liz," Lila spoke up. "I'm with Jessica. There is no way we're going to get out of her. We're all going to die here, hungry, depressed, and worst of all, dirty."
"Come on you guys, there has to be a way out of here," Amy said.
"Oh yeah? What makes you so sure?" Jessica challenged Amy, narrowing her eyes.
"Uh, well . . .," Amy stammered.
"See!" Jessica yelled, throwing her hands in the air for effect. "We are going to die here!"
"No wait!" Elizabeth suddenly yelled out. "Amy's right. If there's a way in, there's got to be a way out."
"But Liz, we spent have an hour looking for the ‘door' and we still haven't found it yet," Ken pointed out.
"But maybe that's not the exit. Maybe that the way in, but there's another way out," Elizabeth explained.
"Hey! That could just be it!" Todd agreed.
Jessica smiled despite of herself. "Lizzie, you've done it again! There's got to be a way out."
"Good thinking, Liz" Winston complimented.
Elizabeth blushed.
"Alright everyone. No more chit chat. Let's start looking!" Jessica commanded, but with a smile.
Everyone spread apart, taking their own little corner to look through. Jessica and her friends, all felt for buttons, or a lever of some sort that might lead to the opening of an escape route. The friends all searched with enthusiasm, but as time passed by, everyone loss interest. Jessica broke the half hour of silence.
"I hate to be the first to say this. . . again, but it looks like we're not getting out of here."
"Yes we are," Elizabeth insisted. She looked at her watch. "We've only been looking for half an hour."
"Yeah, and do you remember what happened last time when we spent half and hour looking for the door? We didn't find it!" Jessica exclaimed.
"But I thought we agreed that it was because that wasn't the exit?" Elizabeth asked.
"Yeah, because there is no exit!" Jessica yelled. With frustration, she kicked the wall behind her.
And to everyone's surprise, the wall began to move.
"Jessica, how do you do that?" Ken asked.
"Uh, well. . .," Elizabeth heard Jessica respond. Jessica was too surprised herself to even answer Ken's question.
"See, I told you there was a way out," Elizabeth told her sister.
"I guess you're right," Jessica answered.
"Alright, Jess!" Lila exclaimed. "Now we can finally get out of here."
"So," Todd began. "Who want's to go first?"
No one volunteered. Elizabeth just realized that the tunnel was awfully dark. Elizabeth waited for a few more seconds. When no one else still hadn't volunteered, she decided to take the risk. . . again.
"Where's the flashlight?" Elizabeth asked. Everyone seemed to breathe again, once Elizabeth volunteered.
"Here," said Amy, passing her the flashlight. "And thanks."
Elizabeth smiled.
"Okay, everyone ready?" Elizabeth asked.
"Yup," Ken answered, after looking at everyone else, who seemed eager to get out of there.
"Okay," Elizabeth said. She slowly shined the flashlight around. Surely enough, it was passageway. She took the first step in. Elizabeth lead everyone around the tunnel. The tunnel had a musky smell to it. And instead of feeling dry, like the rest of Mexico, the air felt moist. We must be under ground, Elizabeth thought to herself. No one spoke throughout all this. Elizabeth continued to shin the flashlight a head of her, taking cautious steps the whole time. After what seemed like hours, Elizabeth realized that her flashlight wasn't the only thing providing the light in there. Elizabeth turned out her flashlight.
"Hey!" Lila yelled. "What did you do that for?"
"Just wait," Elizabeth said.
After a couple of minutes, when everyone's eyes adjusted to the dark they realized what Elizabeth was talking about. In the distance, they could see light.
"We're close to the exit!" Jessica exclaimed.
"Alright! We're going to make it!" Winston said.
"Gee, Win. You make it sound like we were going to die or something," Elizabeth joked.
"We could of," Winston defended.
"Let's just go," Todd said, eagerly.
"Alright," Elizabeth said.
Elizabeth and her friends continued their way down the tunnel. They reached the end, and were face to face with vines.
"We're almost there. All that's keeping us from darkness and light, are these bunch of vines," Elizabeth announced.
"Well then let's chop our way through!" Winston exclaimed.
"One problem. What are we going to use?" Elizabeth asked.
Everyone was quiet for a moment. Then Winston spoke again.
"Our hands!" he replied.
"No way am I going to use my hands to chop through those vines," Lila warned.
"Come on Lila. They aren't even that thick," Todd pointed out.
"Fine. But don't expect me to do much," Lila slowly used her hands to break some small vines.
The rest of the gang began breaking their way through. After awhile, Elizabeth and her friends finally finished. Elizabeth stumbled through, with everyone else behind her. Somehow, they all landed on top of one another. Everyone got up and looked around. They were in some kind of woods. But in the distance, they could make out the faint figures of the pyramids they were just in.
"Look!" Amy pointed.
"Alright! We made it!" Winston couldn't help but say.
Everyone cheered and rejoiced. It was getting dark, but no one seemed to care. Even Lila was too caught up in the laughter to realized that she was filthy. Elizabeth looked at her friends and joined in the laughter.
Elizabeth took in a deep breath of air. They were free.
