Born to humble parents in a mountain village on Naboo, Amidala was identified early in life as one of Naboo's brightest and most talented children. She was thus trained from a young age to become a leading figure in Naboo politics. Her education ranged from language studies (she is fluent in many) to self defense. By the age of twelve, she had been elected Princess of Theed, ruling the city as preparation for more important roles.
About six months before the Battle of Naboo, King Veruna abdicated his throne after ruling the planet for thirteen years. Amidala was immediately elected to replace him. Although she is extremely young at only fourteen, Amidala is not the youngest sovereing ever to rule Naboo. But she may be the most competent. When the Trade Federation invasion began, Queen Amidala remained calm and collected. She listened to the advice of her Jedi rescuers, but relied on Captain Panaka and her handmaidens as well. She refused to emboil her people in war until all other options had been exhausted, and she pleaded Naboo's case with great passion and courage before the corrupt Galactic Senate. When all her efforts failed, Amidala returned to Naboo to aid her people, despite the obvious risk that course of action presented.
On Naboo, Amidala overcame long-standing culteral rifts to forge peace with the Gungans. With the aid of Boss Nass, the Jedi, and Captain Panaka, she then plotted a final confrontation with the Trade Federation. She assigned herself one of the most difficult missions: the capture of Viceroy Nute Gunray. With the aid of Panaka and Sabe, however, Amidala succeeded in this quest. Soon after, Anakin destroyed the droid control ship, ending the Trade Federation invasion completely.
