Lest We Should Forget
by Juliet Benson
David strolled up to the doorway of the Lodging House, hands in his pockets and whistling. It was an unusually great day! Even though he wasn’t sure why, and therefore a little suspicious, David wasn’t one to look a gift horse in the mouth. He smiled, waved cheerfully to Kloppman and skipped up the stairs. As he walked into the Newsies room, he was bombarded by confetti.
"Hey, guys," he called out. "What’s going on?" The room was littered with balloons and confetti, so much he could barely see the floor. There was a large cake setting on one of the bunks, and a proud banner (no pun intended) proclaiming "Happy Alley Kat Day!" was stretched across the ceiling. David was baffled. Jack slung an arm around his shoulders.
"Hey buddy. I forgot, you’ve never heard of Alley Kat Day." David shook his head.
"Enlighten me?" Jack walked him around the room, dodging water balloons.
"It’s a dedicated to Alley Kat,-" here all Newsies froze in whatever they were doing, and Clef (a new (meaning I (meaning the author) made him up) Newsie) played a few notes on his flute "-an awesome Newsie fan. She’s been one of our strongest supporters for years! Words can not express my love for this girl." The other Newsies howled in agreement, and a few surreptitiously wiped away tears. "So we set a day aside, dedicated to fun, laughter and Alley Kat." Again, all Newsies froze and Clef trilled out a couple of notes. "So join in the fun, Davey! Let the laughter light up your soul!" David didn’t have to be told twice, and gleefully joined in the fun and games. (Whoops! Cliché!) …and gleefully leapt into the joy. (Yuck. Badly written.) …and gleefully bonded with the rest of the Newsies, all joined over one common love. (Hmm… Nah.) …and gleefully had a good time. (Good enough. We’ll leave it at that.)
