INTRODUCING THE ASIAN/PACIFIC AMERICAN LAW STUDENTS ASSOCIATION
The Asian/Pacific American Law Students Association (APALSA) is one of the largest student clubs on the McGeorge campus. It is organized to serve the needs and concerns of Asian American and Pacific American law students at McGeorge. Every year, APALSA organizes and co-sponsors numerous events during the school year, such as a charity raffle, banquet, holiday party, and alumni network with the Asian Bar Association of Sacramento (ABAS). Academically, APALSA offers guidance to first year students by assigning Big Siblings, and keeping a library of course outlines and exams to supplement our members' study materials. Though many of APALSA's members come from Asian and Pacific Islander backgrounds, all students are welcome. General meetings serve to update members on campus issues and community events, as well as to discuss selected current events in the Asian American community. All in all, membership in APALSA proves to be a regarding experience in many respects.
PROGRAMS
One of APALSA's staple programs is the "Big and Little Sibling" program in which an upper-division member takes a special interest in the welfare of a particular first-year student. Upon request, experienced students will provide individualized assistance and advice. Nothing helps more than a friendly shoulder to lean on - especially during the first year of law school!
APALSA, along with the University of Davis, King Hall, has established a mentor program with the Asian Bar Association of Sacramento. This program links interested members with working attorneys in the Sacramento area. Participants have the opportunity to communicate on a one-to-one basis with these attorneys, attend ABAS events and to begin networking with other professionals in the area.
CURRENT EVENTS
McGeorge School of Law and APALSA are honored to be the host campus for this Fall's Thomas Tang competition. This appellate advocacy competition is in honor of the honorable Thomas Tang and is open to teams throughout the nation. McGeorge will be hosting the Northern California Regional competitions and the winner will travel to the National Asian Bar Association conference, held later in the year.
