Aria (1987)

"Aria" is a collective film, directed by ten different directors. The film is a labor of love by a British producer named Don Boyd, who convinced 10 directors to interpret 10 famous arias in any style they chose.

The final segment by  Derek Jarman shows a veteran opera singer at her last performance, intercut by 8mm home movies of an early love affair. Jarman has used some old 8mm, with his faithful Tilda and Spencer Leigh, and has put the stuff into other segments with the actress Amy De La Main. The music chosen by Jarman is "Depuis le jour" from Charpentier's Louise.

The other directors are:

Robert Altman   (segment "Les boréades")
Bruce Beresford   (segment "Die tote Stadt")
Bill Bryden (I)   (segment "I pagliacci")
Jean-Luc Godard   (segment "Armide")
Derek Jarman   (segment "Louise")
Franc Roddam   (segment "Tristan und Isolde")
Nicolas Roeg   (segment "Un ballo in maschera")
Ken Russell   (segment "Turandot")
Charles Sturridge   (segment "La forza del destino")
Julien Temple   (segment "Rigoletto")
