Opens across North America February 21

Fred Madison, a successful jazz musician. His wife, Renee -- strangely withdrawn, a beautiful woman. A disturbing study of contemporary marital malaise, the first chapter of the film tracks Fred's anxiety and insecurity, which escalates as he begins to realize that Renee may be leading a double life. He plays sax, she reads at home. Or so she says. Fred's call home? Unanswered. His bed? Is that her in it?

Renee is the focus of her Fred's paranoia: Renee becomes both an object to be treasured and the source of her husband's nightmares. Somehow it is always she who discovers the unlabeled videos dropped during the night on the steps. Somehow it is she who pays the price...

Pete Dayton is an auto mechanic. A good one. His life is situated in a threatened suburbia. Pete's got all the trimmings: a sweetheart named Sheila, a good job at a garage, TV-watching parents, and a picket fence out back. He also has a wealthy client named Mr. Eddy, who will let only Pete touch the inner workings of his expensive black automobiles.

Pete has a chance encounter with Alice, a friend of Mr. Eddy's. Before long he finds himself entangled in a torrid affair with another man's woman -- a woman about whom he knows nothing and who, like Renee, is leading at least one double life....

LOST HIGHWAY is about psychogenic fugue. "Fugue" is "a musical form composed for multiple instruments or voices in which the subject is announced in one voice and then developed by another." However, if psychogenic fugue were Fred's problem -- if it were simply that he had developed a new identity for himself -- how would one explain a new family, new body, and new fingerprints?
