Scene1
It is a brisk September day, it is overcast and cloudy. Preparations are
underway in the cemetery for the funeral later that day. The scene fades
into a bedroom, a black outfit is set perfectly in a chair, shoes are right
in front of it. Sitting at the vanity table is Brenda Barrett. She looks
terrible. Her eyes are bloodshot and there is no expression in them. She
stares unseeing into space. Robin walks into the room. She is wearing a simple
black suit, she looks tired but strong.
R: (softly) Brenda.
Brenda doesn't react.
R: (walks towards Brenda and kneels in front of her grasping her hands)
Brenda, it's time. You have to get dressed. (still Brenda doesn't
respond) Brenda? (after still not getting a response Robin reaches
and grasps Brenda by the arms and gives her a firm but gentle shake)
Brenda!
B: Oh, Robin. Robin, I can't do this.
R: Of course you can. I'll help you. (she starts to rise towards the
clothes)
B: No. NO! (Robin stops and looks at her) I Can't Do This! I thought
I could, but I can't. I'm not strong enough. I thought I was but... (she
chokes up and tears start streaming down her face)
R: (stands and holds Brenda to her) I know this is going to be hard
for you, Bren. (there are tears in her eyes as well) But I know you
CAN do this.
B: No.
R: Yes. Look, there is no way I can make this easier for you. I wish to God
there was but there isn't. (she pulls back and looks Brenda in the eyes)
And I'm not going to lie to you, it's going to hurt, a lot. But you are strong
Brenda, you'll be able to get through this.
B: (pushes away from Robin) I know I need to be strong right now.
I know everyone expects me to go to the cemetery and watch them bury... They
are going to put the person I loved more than my life in a deep, dark hole.
And don't you see Robin, if I go and see that... Then it will be real. It'll
mean that Sonny is really dead and gone forever and I...I....
She breaks down crying, Robin rushes towards her and puts her arm around
her and moves her to the bed. She sits there tears streaming down her face
while Brenda sobs in her arms.
Scene 2
Downstairs; the door opens. Lois enters with Jason coming in behind her.
L: Where is she?
J: Upstairs.
Lois turns and goes up the stairs. Jason is left alone, looks around blankly
and stays standing. A close up of his face reveals a bruise on his right
cheek and a scar that runs from his temple to his cheek bone. He turns and
walks to the window. He stares straight ahead, not a flicker of emotion crosses
his face.
Scene 3
At Luke's, the place is dark. Luke comes in. He reaches to turn on the
light. Nothing happens.
L: Damn.
M: Still not working.
L: (turns quickly towards the tables) Mike?
M: Yeah.
L: (exhales deeply and walks towards the table) Hey man.
Mike doesn't respond.
L: I could use a drink, how 'bout you?
M: Sure.
L: (he bumps into a stool) Damn. Where does Babe keep the flashlight?
Luke finds it. He then grabs a bottle of scotch and two glasses.
M: Last November I found Sonny here. He was having a drink by himself. I
asked him why and he told me that he shouldn't be alone. He should be sharing
the drink with his friend. But he couldn't because his friend wasn't here.
Luke stares at Mike through the darkness.
M: A year ago Michael sat here drinking... Talking about his lost friend.
Stone. And I thanked God. I thanked God because even though Stone was dead
and that broke my heart, Micheal was alive.
L: Mike...
M: Don't say it, Luke. Lets just have our drink and give thanks that we're
alive.
Luke swallows and silently pours their drinks.
Back at the penthouse, we see Lois enter Brenda's room. She sees Brenda
wrapped in Robin's arms. She sighs and walks further into the room.
L: Robin.
R: (looks up at her) Hi.
L: (sits on Brenda's other side) Brenda, honey. You have to stop this.
You're gonna make yourself sick if you keep cryin' this way.
R: Brenda, she's right. Come on, stop. Please.
Brenda attempts to control herself, she is still teary eyed but no longer
sobbing.
L: (reaches for her hand and rubs it) God, you're freezin'. We need
to get something to warm you up. You know my ma always used to give me warm
milk with honey. What do you think? Ha, Bren? Want some?
B: Sure. Whatever.
R: I'll go get it.
B: Wait, don't leave me.
R: I'll be right back. And Lois is going to stay with you. (addressing
Lois) See if you can get her dressed.
L: I'll give it a shot.
Robin leaves.
L: Brenda, come on honey. You have to get dressed.
B: Why? What's the point? Me getting dressed and going to his funeral, what
does that change?
L: It doesn't change a thing. But you know what? Your not leaving this room
and staying locked in here like you have since Sonny died, that doesn't
accomplish anything either.
B: Lois, I...
L: I know, Bren. But you have to think about this, sweetie. You have to go
to this funeral, not because everyone expects you to be there, but for yourself.
B: (sarcastically) For me. (she laughs harshly)
L: I 'm serious, Brenda. Staying here pretending nothin's changed... That
isn't gonna solve anything. You have to go to the funeral to say good-bye
to Sonny. You have to go so you can start making your peace with this.
B: Peace. What are you talking about? I'm not going to get any peace from
this ... You know I sit here and I think about how it was for Robin watching
Stone die. And how we all said how strong she was...is. I think about everything
I said to her and I think God, how stupid did I sound? Everything I said
must have sounded so pointless.
L: Brenda.
B: No, Lois, it's true. I thought about it all and I thought if she could
suffer as much as she did for as long as she did, I could be strong. But
I can't.
L: That's bull, Brenda. I hear the words but it's not the truth. Tell me
the truth.
We see Robin walking down the stairs. She reaches the bottom and walks
to the couch. She puts a hand on it and wraps the other around her waist.
She stays there a moment and heads to the kitchen. She stops when she sees
a picture of Stone and Sonny on a table. She picks it up and runs her fingers
over it gently.
R: (Softly) Why? (Then louder) Why! Dammit! (Crying)
I need someone to tell me why.
She doubles over, sobs racking her body. When, from behind, two strong
arms encircle her waist and hold her up.
Back in Brenda's room.
L: I want you to tell me the truth, Brenda.
B: I don't know what you're talking about.
L: I know you're hurtin' over Sonny's death but there's something more. What
is it?
B: I...I can't.
L: Why? You know you can tell me anything, girlfriend. (more
insistently) What is it? (she approaches Brenda)
B: I...(trying to keep control) It's...
L: (gently, reaching out to hold Brenda's hand) It's OK honey, let
it out.
B: It's my fault! Oh God, it's my fault.
L: (looks at Brenda concerned and confused) What is, sweetie?
B: (breaks away from Lois) Sonny's dead, because of me!
L: Brenda...No...
B: Yes! He was going to live a life without me. He was going to be with a
woman that loved him. He would have lived with Lily and been happy. But I
couldn't let him. I chased after him, because I loved him. I wanted him so
bad nothing else mattered. It was my selfishness that led to this. So how
can I do it? Huh, Lois? How can I go and face a cemetery full of people that
loved him. Knowing I was the one that put him in his grave?
Scene 6
The Outback. Mac is dressed in a black mourning suit. He is sitting at
the bar, staring at a cup of coffee. The door quietly opens, and Dara carefully
enters. She stands for a minute staring at Mac. A look of tenderness crosses
her face; she then approaches Mac.
D: Am I interrupting?
M: Huh?
D: I mean, am I disturbing you?
M: No, of course not. I, ah, I was trying...(sighs) I was trying not
to think. I was trying not to think about Stone. I was trying not to think
about what this is doing to Robin. I was trying not to think about what this
means to me.
D: (moves to sit next to Mac) What do you mean?
M: I mean that despite everything, somewhere along the way, Sonny Corinthos
became my friend. My niece fell in love with his "brother" and I hated it.
I hated her getting close to Sonny and watching her get sucked into a world
that killed my brother and her mother and stepfather. I did everything I
could to keep my promise to raise Robin right and protect her and...
D: (forcefully) Mac, from what I've seen you've done a wonderful job,
Robin is a love-
M: Robin is an HIV positive 19 year-old. Who lives her life dependent on
the pills that Sonny Corinthos bought for her.
D: Mac! You're not worried about that now, are you?
M: Shouldn't I be?
D: Well, I'm not sure... But-
M: So, now what? Jason starts to pay for her medication? They aren't even
seeing each other anymore. I don't know what that means for Robin now.
D: Mac, I can't answer all your questions but...from what I've seen, there
are any number of people that would be glad to help out Robin. BUT, now is
not the time to worry about that. You have to bury your friend first.
M: Yeah (half laughs) My friend. The Mobster.
D: We've talked about that before. You didn't have to agree with what he
did to know that he loved your niece and was good to her.
M: Yeah. (thinks for a moment) Yeah.
Back in the penthouse. Robin doubles over ,sobs racking her body. When
,from behind, two strong arms encircle her waist and hold her up. She resists
for a moment, then turns into those arms. Robin can fell the warmth begin
to seep into her body. But the trembling hasn't stopped. She waits for a
moment and then realizes that she's not the one trembling. She starts to
pull back but can't; the grip that Jason has on her is too strong, it always
was...
R: Jason, we can't...
J: Shush, just for a minute. Just let me hold you for a minute.
Robin acquiesces. They stand there locked together, the pressure increasing
until it looks like neither plans to let go.Just as you can feel the peace
building between them and more, the doorbell rings.
R: No...
J: No...(pulls away from her reluctantly and looks down at her but she
won't meet his eyes; sighs impatiently and heads to the door) Yes?
P: Mr. Morgan. It's Pete, sir.
J: (opens the door) What is it?
P: Mr. Morgan, there are people here to pay their respects?
J: (coldly) What?
P: There are people here to pay their respects to you, now that you are the
new Don. It's custom.
J: (angrily) I don't care... (stops and checks himself) Of
course, Pete. But it'll have to be brief. The car is coming to take us to
the funeral.
P: Yes, Mr. Morgan, I'll be sure to tell them to be quick.
J: Thank you.
Pete heads to the door. Jason turns around and Robin is gone.
Back in Brenda's room.
L: Brenda, you're being ridiculous!
B: Am I?
L: Brenda, you didn't kill Sonny. The life Sonny led, killed Sonny.
Brenda turns away.
L: Brenda, it's true. We could all pretend it didn't matter. But Sonny was
a mobster. That's what killed him.
B: But....
L: OK, I'm not saying it wasn't rash and impulsive chasing Sonny after he
had married Lily. But with anyone else, him leaving her for you wouldn't
have led to Lily blowing to bits. Brenda, Sonny was a grown man who made
his own choices. All his life he chose his job and then you. It was his job
that killed him, not you-
Neither of them has noticed Robin standing in the doorway, holding the
glass of milk. She finishes throwing the door open.
R: That's absurd.
Both Brenda and Lois look at her in surprise.
R: Brenda, you're no more responsible for Sonny's death than I am.
B: Robin...
R: (Walks in and puts the glass on the table) Lois is right. We loved
Sonny and we accepted him no matter what, BUT Sonny was a mobster. And because
he was powerful ,we all thought nothing could touch him. Even Sonny thought
that.
Brenda stares at Robin.
R: Sonny was wrong and now we're all paying the price. That doesn't mean
we love him less or that we mourn him less...(she reaches out to Brenda,
Brenda grasps her hand) Mourn him, Brenda. Miss him and love him, but
let go of the blame. Because in the end, you're all Sonny wanted. He understood
what that meant, and so does everybody else. He wouldn't want you blaming
yourself for this now.
L: Listen to Robin, Brenda.
B: (pauses a moment) I'll try. I think I can get ready now. But I'd
like to be alone.
R+L: OK.
L: (as they're leaving) Don't forget to drink all the milk.
B: (smiles slightly) I won't.
She gets the milk and goes over to her vanity. From inside, she removes
her make-up bag. From inside that her compact. She looks into the mirror
for a long moment and then opens the compact. She removes a pill from within
it, looking at it for a long time, but then, slowly, goes over to the toilet
and flushes all of her pills down the drain.
Robin and Lois are coming down the stairs when they witness this scene.
Someone has exited the room and Jason is finishing a meeting with Luis.
Luis: Thank you again for seeing me, Mr. Morgan.
J: Of course, Luis.
Luis: It's just that with me not being able to make the funeral...I didn't
want you to think I was being disrespectful...
J: No. I understand. (trying desperately to be cordial) Thank you
again.
Luis: No, Thank you, Mr. Morgan. And...You won't forget about the other...about
my son?
J: Consider it taken care of. Good-bye.
Luis: Good-bye.
Luis leaves. Jason closes the door behind him. He leans against it for
a moment.
Lois: Well I certainly hope it's safe for us down here.
J: (turns around slowly, a look of pain crossing his face quickly when
he notices Robin) Yes. (quietly) It's safe.
Robin tries to look indifferent but just succeeds in looking pissed. Jason
stares at her intently, Lois notices the tension but doesn't know how to
diffuse it. Just as it becomes unbearable, Brenda emerges from upstairs.
B: Is the car here? We have to get going. We can't be... (as she reaches
the bottom of the stairs she notices the silence) Is anything wrong?
J: No, nothing is wrong. Yes, the car is here. Let's go.
Brenda looks at the three of them for a moment, but finally moves to the
door. Robin walks quickly and leaves first with Lois close behind her. Brenda
looks back at Jason as he puts on his coat and turns off the lights. He then
puts a hand at her waist and leads her out.
Port Charles Cemetery. It's a fairly brisk day, but the sun has started to shine brightly. The funeral service for Michael Sonny Corinthos is underway. It is a desperate group, made up of the people who loved him most and those who feared him most. Even in death. Those who could not attend from the "territories" had made sure to send ostentatious flowers. Most people didn't notice this but it hasn't escaped Jason. He has told Pete to take note of every person present and each petal sent. Those who had made their presence known today could tentatively be counted as allied to him. Those that had not...had to be taken care of. Jason looks straight ahead at the casket. It takes every ounce of self-control he has not to take off. His clothes are choking him. His eyes are burning but he has no tears left to cry. He feels empty, hollowed out. He still can't believe that things have ended this way. But as he looks at the casket of his mentor and brother, he knows all the promises he has made Sonny will be kept. His word is all he has left to give to Sonny. He thinks of Robin and knows some promises will be easier to keep than others. He wants to look at her but doesn't dare. He knows she is hurting like hell. She wouldn't show it now, either. He wonders how different they really are.
Robin looks over at Brenda to make sure that she's was ok. She tries to concentrate on what Mike is saying but can't. She can't get past the feeling in her bones that nothing will ever be the same. She wants to look at Jason but doesn't, it hurts too much to be this close and still so far apart from him. Behind her shoulder she sees Lucy and Kevin sitting next to Luke, Laura, Lucky and some girl she doesn't know. She turns her head around when she realizes that Mike has stopped talking. The priest begins the final rites.
AJ realizes he probably shouldn't have come, but he hasn't been able to stop himself. Even though he knows Jason doesn't want him there, he has to be to support him. He doesn't think Jason even knows he's there. He looks over at the girl sitting next to him and realizes she is crying silently. She looks familiar and he tries to place her. Isn't she...
Should she be here? I barely knew Sonny but, she thinks fiercely, he was always... He was always good to me. Let's face it he was better to me than I was to my own brother. Stone. Where are you now? Are you here? Can you see me? God, I can't believe Sonny is gone now too. She starts abruptly when she realizes everyone is standing. They are lowering the casket into the ground.
Brenda is sure she is being buried as well. She knows that if she opens her eyes, all she will see is darkness. She can feel the earth being thrown onto to the casket, weighing her down. She opens her eyes but she is still there. She can't take it, can't stand it... She looks up at the sky, the sun burns into her eyes; he will be buried next to Lily. She is still his wife at the time of his death. So that's where Sonny will lay for all time. In death, Lily finally got what she could never have in life. Sonny, for an eternity.
It's over, it has all happened so fast. Jason looks over at Brenda and
sees that Robin is holding her up. Lois comes to help her. Brenda is shaking
so much she can barely stand.
J: (to Lois) They're bringing the car around lets get her out of here.
L: Good (to Brenda) Come on, sweetie (she struggles with her own
tears) Let's go.
B: (barely audible) I don't want to be alone.
L: You won't be. Some people are comin' back to the penthouse.
Brenda nods. Lois and Jason lead her away. Robin lets herself fall behind.
She can't face all those people, and she turns and bumps into Mac.
M: Where are you going, Robin?
R: I just need to be by myself right now, Uncle Mac.
M: (stares at her) OK, (hugs her quickly) I'll be at home if
you need me.
R: Thanks.
Robin walks away. Mac watches her go.
AJ has followed the girl all the way to the park. He has surprised
himself by doing this, but there was something very vulnerable about her.
He stops when he realizes that she has sat down on a bench. He is uncertain
about approaching her, at the last second he does.
AJ: (offering her a handkerchief) Excuse me.
Gina: (surprised) Oh, Thank you.
A: (uncomfortable) I'm sorry if I'm bothering you.
G: No. I'm glad for the company. You can (she gestures to the bench)
A: Thanks.
G: Um, did you know Sonny well?
A: Not really. He, well, my brother Jason...He and him were close, so...
G: That's right, you're AJ Quartermaine.
A: (laughs softly) Yeah. And you? I mean?
G: I'm Gina. Stone's sister. I got to know Sonny after Stone died and...(she
chokes up)
A: Hey! (putting his arm around her) Listen, can I help? Give you
a ride home or something?
G: Well, I don't want to trouble you and-
A: (gently) Hey, I offered.
G: You know you're really nice, (bitterly) nicer to me than I was
to my own brother!
A: (confused) Excuse me?
G: He wanted to see me before he died. But I messed it up. I was unkind and
he died before I could explain that I was just scared... and, I just ruined
everything!
A: (firmly) Listen, when I first found out about your brother, I didn't
treat him well either.
Gina looks at him closely.
A: I was ignorant about a lot of things and I took my ignorance out on Stone.
But he never held it against me. Gina, you were his sister--
G: I know, THAT's what makes it worse.
A: No. Listen. If he could forgive me, I wasn't anything to him... You were
his sister- I know that he forgave you too, and loved you just the same.
G: (impatiently) Come on!
A: I'm serious, you know Stone was like that. And you know he wouldn't want
you beating yourself up like this.
G: (thinks about it) I...It's hard but, thank you for what you said.
A: (sincerely) I meant every word. (he smiles ironically) Someday
when you're feeling bad again, call me and ask me to tell you about MY brother.
G: Jason?
A: (decisively) No. Some other time. (he stands and gestures down
a path). My car is this way, lets get you home.
G: (still curious) Okay.
They exit.
Back at the penthouse. Jason is tired. Right now that is the only thing
he's sure of. He knows he has said the right things to the right people but
he is tired. This is going to be more complex than he originally thought.
He looks around and realizes that most people have gone. Brenda and Lois
are on the couch, Luke and Mike are standing by the window. Robin is... not
here. He looks around again. He thinks about it and realizes he hasn't seen
her since the funeral that afternoon. He stalks over to Brenda and Lois.
J: Where's Robin? Is she upstairs?
Both look at him.
L: Robin. No, I...don't know..
J: (turns and walks over to Luke and Mike) Where's Robin?
L: I haven't seen her since this afternoon, she was talking with Mac. Why?
What's up?
J: It's not safe for anyone connected to Sonny to be-- (he checks
himself)
M: (concerned) Do you want us to help--
J: (impatiently) No. I'll handle this.
L: Jason--
J: (walks away, whipping out his cell-phone at the same time, dials)
Mac? Yeah listen, is Robin there with you?
Mac: No. Jason is something--
J: Do you know where she is?
M: She just told me she wanted to be by herself--
J: All this time? Alone!
He hangs up on Mac and strides out the door, leaving two bodyguards struggling
to catch up.
The Bridge. It is night and there is a breeze. Robin is standing at the bridge. She is looking out over the water. There are tears in her eyes. She is thinking back to the night that she and Sonny threw Stone's ashes into the water. She can see Sonny in her mind's eye, smiling at her, crying with her, holding her. God, the irony. When she had first met Sonny, she had just wanted to get him out of Stone's life. After all, he was a mobster that had given Karen drugs. Now she loved him like the brother he had been to Stone.
Tears she could no longer control streamed down her face. Never in her wildest dreams had she though she would bury them both. She wondered if Robin Scorpio was just poison. Everyone she touched seemed to die: Her grandmother, her parents, Duke, Stone, and now Sonny. Now she, too, was dying from that poison. It was flowing directly in her veins. Maybe she should put the last of the poison to rest. Maybe she should just join all the people she loved. Her gaze hardened as she looked at the star strewn sky. Maybe she should see if this Robin could fly. Fly, free from all pain.
She looked down at her hand and at the ring Stone had placed there. She had promised always to love and remember him. Had she broken that promise? Suddenly more than anything she wanted to see his brown eyes, to touch his dark hair. She leaned harder on the bridge, her hands gripping the cement. She started to raise herself to stand on the railing. She stood there swaying, wondering if there would be peace in her death. Wondering if it hurt to die. She stood swaying, reaching...
Scene 14
The Bridge. Jason arrives at the bridge, his eyes searching desperately
through the darkness. He can't believe his eyes when he sees Robin, standing
rocking on the railing. He moves forward quickly, needing to reach her before
she does something crazy. His foot hits a rock. The noise startles Robin,
she looks over her shoulder a look of her surprise on her face when, suddenly,
she loses her balance... Jason races forward, his hands outstretched ,reaching
for her and just missing her as she pitches over the side screaming his name.
A look of horror and disbelief cross his face. He screams.
J: Nooooooooo!!! God, Noooooo!! Robinnnn!!!
The Bridge. Jason gasps. He blinks but Robin is still there, standing
on the railing. He gulps in air. He tries to decide how best to approach
her to keep her safe. He moves forward cautiously and VERY quietly. He is
standing right next to her and she hasn't noticed. Her eyes are focused dead
ahead. He slowly reaches for for her hand saying--
J: Robin.
She pulls forward. Jason pitches forward and grabs her leg with the his
other hand, he then throws them both backward onto the ground.
R: Ow!
J: (leaning to her) Ow? (dangerously, quietly) Ow?
R: (stares back at him) Ouch?
J: (exploding) WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU DOING!!!!!!!!
R: (dully) Jumping. (gets up slowly and dusts herself off)
J: That's it? (furious)
B:(blankly, dispiritedly) You asked what I was doing and--
Jason gets up and grabs her by the arms. He gives her a shake.
R: Hey! (startled)
J: Snap out of this.
R: (snarls) What!
J: (trying to be calm) Why are you acting like this?
R: Like what? (sarcastically sweet) How would you like me to act,
Jason?
J: Robin... You're scaring me.
R: (pleased) Am I? How does it feel?
J: It...
Robin pulls away and turns to go. Jason doesn't let go of her arm.
J: Wait a minute!
R: (angrily) What?
J: (not sure what to say) As long as your in Port Charles until you
get on the plane back to Paris, you're going to have two bodyguards--
R: No!
J: (eyes narrowing)Don't argue with me Robin. It's not safe for you
to walk around unprotected. There are too many things left unresolved and
you won't be safe unless--
R: I don't want--
J: Let me do this for Sonny.
R: (flinching) That was low, Jason.
J: I'll do anything to keep you safe.
R: Anything (sarcastically). There are an awful lot of bridges in
France, Jason.
J: (pissed) Which is why I'm going to make you swear on Sonny' s grave
that you won't ever try something like this again.
R: (stubbornly) I--
J: Think, Robin, think. Sonny loved you so much, he was so happy knowing
you were going to have a future. How could you shame his memory, his love
for you like this?
R: (tears fill her eyes, she looks down) Fine.
Jason keeps looking at her intently.
R: (impatiently) I swear. Okay? (walks back to the railing and
leans on it)
J: (still shaken, concerned and angry) What...got you this way?
R: (not turning around, murmurs) Huh?
J: Don't play games, Robin. What were you thinking about that...well?
R: (slowly) My parents, Sonny.... (softly) Stone.
J: (frowns) Of course.
R: What?
J: Of course. (hurt) Wasn't it enough that he gave HIV? Just when
you start to get better, you go to jump for him?
R: (shocked) Don't you talk about Stone that way! Ever!
J: No. I shouldn't dare.
R: (furious) Stone was good and kind and gentle. He loved me and--
J: He loved you so much that he didn't bother to protect you?
R: How Dare You?
J: (slowly moving closer) Isn't it ironic? Huh? Robin? That I met
you on this bridge.
R: (still angry and confused) What??
J: On this bridge, where Stone jumped off yelling "I Love you Robin!!! "?
On this bridge, where you and Sonny threw his ashes into the water. Where
you would come to think of him? And stand there, crying, missing him!
R: (uncertain) So--
J: So? (quietly) Was it all a lie, Robin? Was that why you could leave
to Paris?
R: Jason? No you KNOW--
J: Do I? (softly) Did you ever pretend I was him?
R: What?!?
J: (louder) Did you ever--
R: (horrified) No!! Jason! Never!!! How could you think that!! I could
never--
J: (moving away from her) I don't care! I don't--
R:(goes around him, frantically holding onto his arms) Listen to me,
Jason! I loved Stone more than anything. When he died... It's true I never
thought I could love that way again. But, when I met you here... It was you
I saw, Jason. It was your beautiful blue eyes...(reaches up to cup his
face, he lets her but doesn't respond) That wasn't a lie. I never expected
it, but--
Robin looks at him closely, she still hasn't reached him, no matter what's
happened she has to make him see. Robin reaches up, grabs him and kisses
him. Trying desperately to make him feel... to know how much she loved
him.....Jason stands for a moment, stunned. Then he moves, shoving a hand
into her hair, the other moving down her back. Robin holds onto Jason's shoulders
as he lifts her to sit on the railing. They are kissing passionately. Robin
moves closer to Jason Dimly, a ringing can be heard. Jason and Robin are
oblivious to everything but each other. They are holding each other tightly,
the kiss turning gentle... Jason strokes Robin's hair, and they are breathing
heavily when Pete rushes in.
P: Um, (cough) Excuse me? Mr. Morgan?
Jason and Robin still don't respond.
P: (louder) Mr. Morgan!
They hear him and freeze. dazed, Jason pulls away from Robin.
J: ....wha- What?
P: Mr. Morgan, excuse me ,sir. But we just got the call from Puerto Rico.
Sir, it's urgent you respond.
Jason looks at Robin silently.
R: (smiles sadly, whispers) Of course.
J: Robin. (moving back to let her get down) Robin we NEED to talk.
I'm sorry--
R: (firmly) No Jason. You need to take care of business. That comes
first remember? (she starts to walk away)
J: (frustrated) Robin.
J: (sadly, dispiritedly) Don't worry about me, Jason. I'll get home
safe and sound.
Jason watches her leave. He turns to look at Pete.
P: (nervously) I'm sorry, Mr. Morgan, it's just that it's the call
we were waiting for and--
J: (interrupting) Make sure that there are two guards with Miss Scorpio
24 hours a day until she leaves Port Charles.
P: Mr. Morgan, is that necessary? I'm sure...
J: Are you questioning my orders?
P: (quickly) No, of course not. I'll see right to it.
J: Good.
Jason turns to look in the direction Robin left in. He stands there as
the scene fades out.
End, Book One, A New Don.
Scene 1
It is several days later. The OutBack. Mac is making plans to leave town.
A friend has called in a favor... It shouldn't be complex but he is worried
about leaving Robin alone. Dara enters the OutBack. She walks over to Mac.
D: Hello, Mac.
M: Dara! Hi! What brings you by?
D: (smiling) I just came to steal a cup of coffee.
Mac raises his eyebrows.
D: My percolator just broke. And I cannot face the office without my first
cup.
M: Hmmm. Well ,counselor, one cup of coming up, on the house of course.
(smiles)
D: Thanks. Listen, Mac, I was looking into singing again and... (a ring
is heard and she makes a face) I have to get that.
M: Sure.
D: (listening intently) Ok, I'll be right there. (sighs)
M: Let me guess. No time for your first cup.
D: No, there's been a development in a case and well... But listen maybe
for lunch? Is Felicia free?
M: She's visiting Mariah, and I've got work to do.
D: (disappointed) Oh.
M: I'm going to be out of town for a day or so, but maybe when I get back...
D: That'd be great.(another ring) Ahhhhh!! I'd better just go,
but call me.
M: Will do.
D: Bye
Dara leaves, striding out, talking into the phone. She doesn't notice
Jax and he narrowly avoids missing her, then goes over to Mac.
J: Hey, Mac.
M: Jax.
J: (carefully) How are you?
M: (looking at him closely) Fine, but why do I get the feeling that's
not why you stopped by?
J: (exhaling) Well, I wanted to ask about Robin and...
M: Brenda?
J: Yeah, I just, you know how I felt about Corinthos. I didn't want to seem
hypocritical. But I am worried, about both of them.
M: Well, neither of them is doing well. (confidentially) Brenda
...(sighs) well, Brenda's just locked herself into her house. Robin's
seeing her everyday. She's just kinda shut herself down.
J: (really concerned) Maybe I should go see her, then...
M: (quickly) Jax, with your history, I don't know if seeing Brenda
right now... With Mike and Jason around... I mean it could look...
J: Like I'm trying to take advantage of a bereaved woman? Is that it, Mac?
You know Brenda is my friend and I care deeply about her...
M: If you care about her, then give her some space, Jax, she's not ready
to deal with any type of pressure right now.
J: I would never pressure her!
M: Not intentionally.
J: (sighs) Fine. And Robin?
M: Robin? She's the opposite, She's running herself ragged trying to be there
for Brenda and Mike, while still getting some assignments done for school.
I don't know if she's given herself a moment to breathe. And now...
J: What?
M: Well, I'm going out of town, just for a day or so but...
Jax looks at him intently.
M: She's going to be by herself and I'd appreciate it if you'd give her a
call.
J: Check up on her?
M: Frankly, yes.
J: You know Robin, I don't know if she'd appreciate "Uncle Mac" interference.
M: So, don't tell her. Look, you said you were concerned, just give her a
call see how she's doing.
J: (cautiously) OK.
M: (gratefully) Thanks, Mate. Are you interested in eating?
J: (sheepishly) No I have a business meeting in twenty minutes. So,
I should get going.
M: Thanks again, Jax.
J: Sure.
Jax walks out. The scene ends.
Scene 2
Jason is at the docks. He is with Pete and another person, a young guy,
Christopher. He has brown hair and blue eyes, about 5'11". He also has a
major chip on his shoulder. He is Luis's son. Luis has called in a favor,
it seems that Chris has begun to run a wild. After bailing him out of jail
this last time, Luis has hopes that Jason can keep him in line.
P: (Looking Christopher over) Do you know why you're here?
Jason looks on silently.
C: (trying to look unaffected) Yeah.
P: (smirking) Why?
C: My old man.
P: That's right. Your father was owed a favor and he's asked for us to give
you a job. But we aren't running a baby sitting service here. How old are
you, kid?
C: (bluffing) Twenty.
P: Yeah right, kid.
C: Listen I--
J: (impatiently, quietly) Don't lie. Don't ever lie to me again. I
don't accept lies, and there are consequences when you lie to me.
C: (nervously) What? I am...
J: (sighing) We can just call your father. Would he say you're twenty?
C: (backed into a corner) Seventeen.
P: That's what I thought. (to Jason) He's still underage, we can't...
J: (to Chris)Do you have a license?
C: Yeah.
Jason raises his eyebrows.
C: (with bravado) Do you want me to show it to ya?
J: (not bothering to answer him) Messenger. Do you think you can handle
that? Take something from point A to point B. If you can't handle it, you'll
be unloading boxes out of the back of trucks in Canada -- where it's real
cold.
C: Uhh...
J: That's what happens if you're incompetent. If you cheat me or lie to me
again, promises to your father won't mean a thing.
C: (trying to shrug it off) Sure thing, Mr. Morgan.
J: (Jason stares at him for a another moment) Go and wait by the car.
Chris walks away.
P: Jason, It's a problem we don't need...
J: Sonny said, you honor requests if they're within boundaries. We owed Luis
a favor. It's done. Now we give the kid a couple of fake trips to test him
out. See how how he does, if he can hack it, great. If not....(looks
meaningfully at Pete)
P: (sighing) Fine. But where's the kid gonna stay? He's not old enough
to be on his own.
J: Nobody local needs a roommate?
P: I'll look into it, but for now... (looks at Jason)
J: What? With me?
P: I have a full house. With teenage daughters! There's no way...
J: (curtly) Fine. (mutters to himself) Brenda, Lois, now this
kid. (thinking) You know, Pete, I've been giving it some thought.
I can't stay in the penthouse... and Jake's is out of the question. For now
I guess I'll stay in a hotel, but I really need a place of my own, fast.
(thinking of Sonny) It has to be classy, though. Somewhere nice. Do
we have anybody that can take care of that?
P: A real estate agent?
Jason just stares at him.
P: Okay, okay, I'll take care of it.
The scene ends.
Scene 3
The penthouse. Brenda is sitting listlessly on the couch. Robin and Lois
are talking in the kitchen.
R: How much longer can you stay?
L: I'm not sure. When are you leavin'?
R: Sunday. I wish I could stay longer, but I can only miss so much school...
L: I understand. I have Ma lookin' after Brooke Lynn, but I miss her so much.
Plus there's this band and...(sighs) But if we both leave... Where
does that leave Brenda?
R: (concerned) I know she's not ready to be by herself.
L: (firmly) We'll figure somethin' out. Maybe I could bring the baby
up here and work out of here for awhile. I mean the band can rehearse anywhere...
R: I'm sure my Uncle Mac would book them, and Luke, too. I don't know if
you would want that...
L: (thoughtfully) A little exposure wouldn't hurt them...
R: I'll take this tray out to Brenda. Then I have to go meet my Uncle Mac
for lunch. (sighs) I know he's worried about me... but--
L: Are you all right, Honey?
R: (faking it) Sure.
L: All right, sweetie.
Robin walks to the living room. Lois stares after her thoughtfully.
R: (to Brenda.) Here we are.(places the tray in front of her on
the table)
B: Thanks, Robin.
L: (walks in to the stairs) I'm goin' to make a few calls, if anyone
needs me, holler.
R: (smiling) Sure, Lois.(turning, trying to encourage Brenda)
Come on, Bren, you have to eat. You have to keep up your strength.
B: (looks like she's going to argue, then shrugs her shoulders) Fine.
R: (pleased) Good, I-- (the doorbell rings) I'll get it, you
eat. (walks to the door and opens it, it's Mike) Hi Mike!(gives
him a hug)
M: (looking happy to see her, hugs her back) Hello, Robin. How are
you?
R: (sighs) Well, I'm trying...
M: We all are, sweetie. (gives her another quick squeeze) We all are.
(looks up and sees Brenda and walks over to her) Hey, Brenda.
B: (softly) Hello, Mike.
R: (quietly) Look, I got to get going. I don't know if I'll be back
tonight, but I'll be back tomorrow morning. (moves to hug Brenda)
B: Thanks, honey.
R: You don't have to thank me, silly. (to Mike) Make sure she eats.
M: I will. Bye, Robin.
Robin touches him on the shoulder as she passes to the door. She gets
her purse and jacket and walks outside. She closes the door and leans on
it for a moment with her eyes closed. She struggles for a second, then opens
her eyes and leaves. Back inside, Mike is now sitting next to Brenda.
M: Robin's right. You have to eat something, Brenda. You look like you're
wasting away.
B: (suddenly) How do you do it? Huh ,Mike? How do you do all the normal
stuff everyone expects? I know everyone's worried about me... (tearfully)
but I just don't... I can't...
M: (leans forward and hugs her to him, she cries softly on his shoulder)
Honey, I can barely do it. But I think of Michael (his voice breaking)
and I know... (tearing up himself) I.... I don't know, Brenda.
I just don't know.
The scene ends.
Robin and Mac's house. Robin arrives she walks in and takes off her coat.
She calls out to Mac.
R: Uncle Mac, I'm home! (no response) Uncle Mac? (she walks into
the living room and see a note folded on the table, which she picks up and
reads out loud) "Robin, I'm sorry I couldn't keep our lunch date! My
flight departed sooner than I expected. I bought you lunch from the Outback
and there are plenty of groceries for dinner. So EAT!!! I'm sorry again.
I should be back in a day or so. I'll call you. Take care, Love, Uncle Mac."
Robin sighs and puts the letter down. She goes to the couch and sits down.
She puts her head in her hands for a long moment.
R: (finally, she whispers) Jason....
She struggles with her tears and she gives in and cries, shudders racking
her body. When she finishes, she curls up on the couch, and exhausted, she
falls asleep.
Later that evening, Robin is still sleeping on the couch curled into a
corner when the phone rings. At first she doesn't wake, after a few more
rings she opens her eyes and groggily sits up. She looks around and reaches
over to grab the phone.
R: (sleepily) Hullo?
J: Robin? Are you okay?
R: Mac?
J: No, Robin, it's Jax.
R: Jax?
J: (repeating) Robin? Are you okay?
R: Yeah.... (slowly) Yeah, I fell asleep and...
J: I woke you.
R: Yeah. But it's okay. I didn't mean to fall asleep.
J: If you did ,I'm sure it's because your body needed it. Speaking of which,
have you eaten dinner yet?
R: (blankly) Dinner? But.... (noticing it has gotten dark)
No, I didn't even eat lunch, I fell asleep right before and I guess...
J: Robin.
R: (ironically) I know, "I have to eat". Believe me, that sounds familiar.
J: So, what are you going to do?
R: Well, Uncle Mac bought some groceries.... (disinterestedly trailing
off) so I guess I'll...
J: Yeah. Okay. How would you like not to worry about it?
R: Huh?
J: Give me forty-five minutes.
R: What? Jax?
J: Forty-five minutes and you'll have a delicious, already cooked meal in
front of you. See you. (he hangs up)
R: But, Jax? (dial tone) Ahhhh. (she stares at the receiver for
a moment then shrugs, dispiritedly) Oh, well.
Robin hangs up the phone and ,yawning, walks up stairs. The scene ends.
Scene 5
Robin's house. The doorbell rings. Robin comes running down the stairs.
She is hastily buttoning her shirt. Her hair is still damp from the shower.
She gets to the door and opens it. There is a tall man in a trench-coat at
her door. Robin frowns at him.
R: Yes, Herman.
H: (swallows) Harry, Miss.
R: (impatiently) Yes?
H: Miss, There's this guy. Says his name is Jax? He says your expecting him--
R: (alarmed) You didn't hurt him? Did you?
H: (quickly) No, No. So's he's OK?
R: Yes.
H: (to an unseen man) All right. He's been cleared.
J: (walks forward looking unruffled and flashes Robin a confused look)
Your reception area?
R: (grabbing him by the arm and pulling him inside, she slams the door
in Harry's face) Look, I'm sorry about that.
J: It's all right. What are they? Honor Guard?
R: (sighing) Jason insisted. I tried to tell him that I don't need
them but--
J: (looking at her with his brow furrowed) Jason insisted?
Robin looks away from Jax. She walks to the living room.
J: (follows her) Robin?
The scene fades out.
Scene 6
Luke's. Luke is sitting at a stool. A shot glass is in his hand and he
is slowly smoking a cigar. The door swings open. Lucky walks in. He looks
at his dad for a moment then approaches him.
Lucky: (softly) Hey Dad.
Luke: (slowly) Hey, Cowboy.
L: (sitting himself on a stool) It's looking pretty deserted in here,
Dad. When are we going to open?
Luke: (exhaling smoke) Soon.
L: Tomorrow? The next day? When, dad?
Luke: Lucky.
L: Dad. I'm not trying to bug you, man. It's just I'm worried about ya.
(pauses) And so is Mom.
Luke: Did your mother send you down here?
L: (snorting) Yeah, right dad. If she had something to say to you,
she'd send me?
Luke: I see your point. (sighing) I just haven't felt like opening
the place without my partner.
L: (carefully) I know, Dad. It's just--
Luke: Anyway, I've been thinking about it and I'm going to re-open this weekend.
All right?
L: Sure, man.
Luke: Life goes on for the living.
Luke takes another puff of his cigar. The scene fades out.
Scene 7
The Penthouse. Lois is walking down the stairs. Jason quietly enters and
Lois walks towards him.
L: Hey, Jason.
J: Lois. Where's Brenda?
L: Upstairs, I took her a tray of food and she promised me she'd try and
eat somethin' and get some rest.
J: Will she?
L: (sighing) Probably not.
Upstairs. Brenda is sitting on the bed, the tray in her lap. She looks
at the food and looks nauseated. She carefully puts the tray on the floor.
The scene returns to Lois and Jason downstairs.
J: I just came by to check on how things were here. And I've got to get another
room at The Port Charles Hotel.
Lois raises her eyebrows.
J: Plus, (sighs) I don't want to go into it but I'm going to have
someone--
Lois stares.
J: This kid--
L: Jason, do I really need to know?
J: (confused) It's this kid, Christopher. He's going to work for me
and he doesn't have a place to stay yet.
L: Oh.
J: Yeah, so that's pretty much it. If either of you needs anything, call
me on the cell phone.
L: All right. Thanks, Jason.
J: No problem.
He turns and leaves. Upstairs, Brenda is in bed, her arms wrapped around
herself. She is shaking. Downstairs ,Lois walks to the sofa, and gets her
wallet out of her purse. She opens it and looks at a picture of Brooke Lynn.
She sighs and leans back onto the couch and closes her eyes. The scene fades
out.
Scene 10
Jason walks down to the car, he sees Pete arguing with Christopher.
J: What's going on here?
P: He's been hired five seconds and already he can't follow orders.
C: (angrily) That's not true.
P: Hmph--
C: I just told him I wanted to take a walk. And he freaked out.
J:(staring at him) Fine.
Simultaneously
P: See kid I told ya--
C: Listen I-- Fine?
P: (incredulously) Fine? Jason do you--
J: (looks at Pete, then at Chris) One hour. Then you find your way
to The Port Charles Hotel. There'll be a key at the front desk. (hands
him some money) Don't start messing up now.
C: (cautiously) All right. (he turns and walks away)
P: (after they've gotten in the car) Was that a good idea?
J: We'll see.
P: (exasperated) He doesn't even know where anything is!
J: (tiredly) So we'll see how good his sense of direction is.
P: Yeah. (mutters) Wonder where the punk'll end up?
The scene fades out.
Scene 11
The Docks. Emily is walking alone. She's snuck out of the house. As much as she loves everyone they can get to be a bit much. It is a beautiful night. She goes to sit on a bench. She is so involved in her thoughts, she doesn't notice a shape moving in the darkness. A man comes out behind her and covers her mouth. Emily tries to struggle but the man holds her too tight.
Emily shakes with fear. She tries with every fiber in her body to shake the man off her but he is too strong for her. Emily can feel him moving her behind the bench and starting to throw her down onto the wet floor. Her heart beating heavily, the panic in her grows as does her nausea. With her back slammed against the floor she can move nothing but her head, which she shakes from side to side. She manages to shake his fingers loose from her mouth and screams with everything inside her, "Nooooooo!!!!!!!!"
Scene 12
Chris is walking around in a daze. Everything has happened so fast. Getting arrested, his dad showing up at the station, them arguing and before he knew it he was stuck in Port-Freakin-Chuckles. This is going to be tough. The only thing he can be sure of is that Pete pretty much hates his guts, the look in Mr. Morgan's eyes when he says never to lie and the fact that he doesn't have a clue where he is. He sighs and turns, looking out into the water. Just then he starts, swivels, trying to figure out what he's heard. A scream? He moves forward hesitantly. The scene fades out.
Scene 13
Robin's House. Jax follows Robin into the living room. We can see that
he is carrying several large brown bags. He sets them carefully on a side
table.
J: (carefully) Robin? Are you in danger?
R: (forcefully) No more than I usually am!
J: (thinking for a second) So, why does Jason say you need the guards?
R: He says that things haven't been completely settled since Sonny-- (her
voice breaks and she pauses) since Sonny died.
J: (struggles not to let his anger show, moves forward and puts his arm
around her, moving her to sit on the couch) I don't like agreeing with
him but if it keeps you safe and it's only for a short while--
Robin looks at him.
J: Until you leave for Paris, right?
R: (sighing) I suppose. (closes her eyes wearily)
J: Well then, since there's nothing that can be done about that for the moment,
how about we get you fed?
R: (smiling) I really appreciate this, Jax. I didn't think that I
wanted the company, but I do.
J: Ay, no problem. So where's your kitchen? I've got to re-heat a couple
of things--
Jax breaks off as a beeping is heard.
R: (looks at her watch) Ohmygosh! My pills!
J: (not panicking) Do you have to take them before or after you've
eaten? Or with something?
R: (moving to stand) Just with water.
J: Ok then, I'll get you the water. You get your pills.
R: (moving to the stairs) The kitchen is that way to the right.
Robin continues up the stairs to her bedroom. Jax walks into the kitchen,
opens all the cabinets, and gets her a glass. Then he opens the fridge and
grabs a bottle of water and goes up the stairs to her bedroom. The scene fades
out.
Scene 12
The Hospital. Stefan Cassadine is walking down the corridor. He is extremely
pensive. He's thinking about Katherine. That scene yesterday after her falling
down the stairs was almost too much for him. He is weary of having to say
the right thing all the time. He has repeated the lies he told so may times
they are starting to become the only truth. He has to get her out of his
life completely, then there is the matter of her relationship with Nicholas
which he depended on so much. If there was only a way to sever that connection...
Suddenly he hears a laugh, he looks up and realizes that he has walked to
the nurses station without being aware of it. It is Barbara and Nurse Vining.
He can't quite make out their conversation and even though Barbara is laughing,
he can see the shadows in her eyes. He sees Monica Quartermaine approach
her and embrace her; as Monica takes her aside, he tries to listen in as
unobtrusively as possible.
M: Bobbie, I meant to get in touch with you yesterday...
B: It's all right, Monica.
M: No, it's not. It's just that with everything that's been happening with
AJ, well--
B: I understand. Thank you for even thinking of it.
M: (startled) Of course, Bobbie, it would have been BJ's 11th Birthday.
B: (softly) Yes.
Stefan starts. Of course, BJ's birthday, he thinks with a pang. He knows
how much that child had meant to Barbara. He also knows how much Lucas means
to her. Even though he is reluctant to admit it to himself, he knows that
Barbara is an exceptional mother. Warm and caring, nurturing yet firm, she
had even been that way with Nicholas... He looks up and sees that Monica
has walked towards the nurses station while Bobbie walks towards the lounge.
After a moment's consideration, he follows her. Bobbie sits down and slowly
closes her eyes. Stefan stares at her for a moment. He notices, impartially,
that even in a hospital uniform she looks beautiful. Bobbie sense the stare
and opens her eyes and sees who it is.
B: (she whispers) Stefan.
S: (he moves closer) Barbara.
B: I can't do this today, Stefan. Frankly ,I don't have the strength. (she
goes to stand and walk away)
S: Barbara, I did not come to begin a quarrel with you.
B: (Bobbie stares at him, raising her eyebrows) What, then?
S: (smoothly) I simply wanted to extend my condolences, about your
daughter. I know yesterday was to have been her birthday.
B: (shocked) You remembered?
S: Of course.
Bobbie is stunned and not sure how to respond.
S: (pausing a beat) Also there is something that has been plaguing
me, especially on this occasion. At the time of our parting--
Bobbie quirks her lips ironically at his civil phrasing.
S: (notices it and his eyes gleam in kind) Yes, well, I said some
things about you as a mother... And I hope that you realize those words were
spoken in anger. Whatever has transpired between us, Barbara, I know that
you are a devoted and wonderful mother.
B: (her eyes misted with tears) I don't know if you mean it or not,
or why you're even saying it, but I don't care. (looking him straight
in the eyes) Thank you. (her beeper goes off) They need me in
the ER. (turns and walks away swiftly)
Stefan stands for a moment, staring after her. He turns to go back to
his office, the wheels in his head turning. He does not notice that Nikolas
has been standing watching him and Barbara converse. Sarah approaches Nikolas
and he smiles at her abstractly as she begins talking about their plans for
that night. As he presses the button for the elevator there is a thoughtful
look on his face. The scene fades out.
Scene 13
Robin's house. Outside.
Harry: (to Max) Well?
Max: Yeah, they were definitely upstairs in the bedroom. The lights are still
on up there, but I can't tell where they are now.
H: Ah, this could be bad. Should we call the boss?
M: And tell him his girlfriend is making time with some blond Aussie.
(snorts) Why don't you call?
H: Be serious.
M: (grimly) I am serious.
H: (nervously) What if he finds out about it and asks why we DIDN'T
call.
M: (sighing, then perking up) I got it! Call Pete, let him know, and
let him tell Morgan!
H: (smiling evilly at Max) Bingo. (takes out his cell phone and
starts dialing)
Back inside. Jax and Robin are downstairs. The remains of a meal in front
of them. They are sitting in on the floor, their backs against the sofa.
There is a fire in the fireplace.
R: That was wonderful, thank you, Jax.
J: (smiling) No problem.
Robin starts to clear the debris.
J: (firmly) Leave it. I'll take care of it.
R: (surprised) You don't have to--
J: (gently) Is it so hard to let someone help you?
R: Ah, all right! If you insist, you can have the pleasure of cleaning up
after me.
J: Hey, now that I know where the kitchen is- -I'm all set! (Stands, grabs
some plates, and heads to the kitchen)
Robin looks at the fireplace, she reaches to get her glass from the table.
Its sides are wet and it slips from her fingers and shatters on the floor.
She looks at the broken glass; in shock, her mind goes back to the night
that Jason got shot. She begins to tremble, her eyes fill with tears.
J: (coming back into the room) Robin, did something-- (sees her
crying) Robin, are you okay? (rushes to her side) Robin, did you
hurt yourself? Are you okay? Are you cut?
R: (crying softly) No.
Careful of the glass, Jax picks her up and moves her onto the couch.
Wordlessly, he hugs her to him as she cries.
R: I feel like I've lost everything. (brokenly) Everything.
Jax's lips tighten as he holds her and lets her cry. The scene fades
out.
Scene 14
Kelly's. Gina's room. She is sitting with the phone in front of her on
her bed, a nervous expression on her face. AJ had said she could call him
but she doesn't know if he was just being polite. He is a Quartermaine, after
all. She needs to talk to somebody and there is no one that she is really
close to, she doesn't feel right calling Jason. And her parents are no help.
She picks up the phone and looks at the number on the slip of paper beside
it, she has already memorized it. She dials but just as it starts to ring,
she slams it back down in the cradle. She takes a breath and tries again,
it rings once, twice-- nobody's home-- Slam! She stares at the phone and
realizes that her hands are shaking. Just then her phone rings, she jumps
and stares at it in shock. Finally, she picks it up.
G: Hello?
AJ: Hello? This is AJ Quartermaine. Did you call here?
G: (caught) Uh, yeah.
AJ: (pause) Well, who is this? What did you want?
G: (shyly) AJ, it's Gina. Gina Cates.
AJ: Gina, Hi. Why'd you hang up?
G: Well, no one picked up--
AJ: (dryly) You only let it ring twice.
G: Yeah....
AJ: I'm just teasing you. How have you been?
G: Well, actually I... (not sure what to say)
AJ: (kindly) Gina, I've learned how important it is to have someone
you can talk to. If you need someone, I'm listening.
G: I just feel guilty calling you to dump my problems on you.
AJ: Hey, none of that! You don't have to pretend, how are you really?
G: Well, (sighing) honestly I don't know. Sometimes I'm fine. Sometimes
I'm sad. I guess I just thought I'd be feeling more at home here by now.
AJ: Haven't made any close friends yet?
G: No, God, I sound like such a loser!
AJ: (laughing) No-- you just sound like it's hard for you to get close
to people and that's understandable.
G: You think so?
AJ: Sure. From what you told me the other day, you're still feeling guilty
about your brother. So maybe you hold back from people so you can't hurt
them and they won't hurt you.
G: (thoughtfully) I hadn't thought about that. You're good at this,
you know?
AJ: What?
G: Talking to people. Every time I talk to you, I feel better. And (taking
a breath) I'd like to thank you.
Aj: You don't have to--
G: I know, but I want to. Let me take you to lunch and I'll listen to your
problems for a change.
AJ: (pleased) Really?
G: (feeling better about having asked) Yeah, really. Are you busy
tomorrow?
AJ: No, tomorrow's fine. Great. Where do you want to meet?
G: How about Kelly's at 12:30?
AJ: Sounds good. I'll see you there.
G: Definitely. Bye.
AJ: Bye.
G: (hangs up the phone and smiles) There, that wasn't so bad.
Gina laughs at herself and gets up to pick out her outfit for tomorrow.
The scene fades out.
Scene 15
Robin has stopped crying. Jax has taken out a handkerchief and is wiping
her face.
R: I'm sorry.
J: For what?
R: Crying all over you.
J: Robin you don't have to apologize. (seriously) I want you to know
that you can count on me.
R: Thank you. That means a lot. (pause) It's just... that right now
it fells like anyone I get close to ends up....(so softly Jax can barely
hear) ends up dead or hurt. And I --
J: Robin-- I can see why you'd feel that way-- And I'm not saying that it's
wrong (pausing) It's understandable, but Robin, I'm not scared to
be your friend.
R: (desolately) That's the truth, you know. That's how I feel all
the time. Like I'm this vial of poison that walks around-- infecting everyone.
J: Robin--
R: Think about it, Jax. My grandmother, my step-father, my parents, (tears
fill her eyes) Stone, Sonny...
J: (grasps her shoulders) Listen to me. (taking a breath) I
know all about blame and recrimination. I (pause) was DIRECTLY responsible
for the explosion that (taking another breath) I thought killed my
wife. And that nearly destroyed me. But I had to learn to let that go.
R: How?
J: (shaking his head) Day by day, I guess. But Robin, you were a child
when those things happened to your family, they died at the hands of others,
you were their victim. And I know how much you loved Stone, but he was
responsible for his actions too.
Robin pulls away from him.
J: You know it's true, Robin. I doubt that you've ever tried to hurt anyone
intentionally in your life--
R: (bitterly) St. Robin.
J: (smiling gently) Which stereotype do you prefer?
R: Neither. I guess it's time I started living without defining myself by
those terms. Huh?
J: Well, that's the way I would go.
R: And you know about these things right?
J: Of course.
R: (moving her head in a circular motion) Any recommendations for
tension relief as well?
J: As a matter of fact, a massage. Which just happens to be one of my
specialties.
R: Jax, you don't have to--
J: Tension relief, remember? So don't argue.
R: (relenting) Oh....okay.
J: I just have to pick up all this glass first.
Robin starts to offer to help. Jax raises an eyebrow at her, and she leans
back onto the couch. Jax exits to the kitchen. You can see Robin's trying
hard to be positive. She ends up closing her eyes and shifting towards the
fire.
Outside. A car pulls up. Before it stops, Jason pops out of the car. Jason
walks up to Harry and Max.
Jason: (impatiently) Well?
H: Uh...sir?
J: How long has he been here?
M: Not long, just a couple of hours.
J: A couple--
Jason turns to the door and opens it. He walks right in. He sees Robin
sitting on the sofa, looking beautiful. A look of tenderness mixes in with
the anger on his face. He approaches her, the light from the fire is shining
on her hair and right at that moment he wants desperately to touch it. He
stays like that a moment, his blue eyes riveted on her.
R: (senses someone standing behind her) I know, Jax, time for my massage,
right? (She leans forward her eyes still closed) I'm ready.
Jason's eyes narrow, but he moves forward and and sits behind her. He
carefully places his hands on her shoulders and begins to rub.
R: (sighs, trying to relax) You were right, Jax, you are really good.
J: (sarcastically, a bitter smile on his face) Thanks, but guess again.
Robin gasps, shoots forward, and turns around to stare at Jason. The scene
fades out.
Scene 16
The Hospital. Bobbie rushes swiftly to the ER. A nurse rushes by and sees
Bobbie.
N: Bobbie, they need you in trauma one.
B: (turns and heads to trauma one, sees nurses and doctors working frantically
on a patient) What's the situation?
N: (briskly) Head trauma. He was at the airport. He got involved with
a robbery. Shot in the head.
Dr. Mitchell: (impatiently) Bobbie, page Monica-- Right now! We have
him stabilized but we have to remove the bullet immediately to avoid further
damage.
B: (instantly) Fine. We should also get in touch with the next of
kin. Does he have ID?
N: (handing Bobbie the patient's wallet) Right here.
Bobbie glances at the wallet as she walks to the phone. She stops and
stares at it in shock.
B: Oh my God.
Bobbie moves even faster to the phone. The scene fades out.
Scene 17
Robin's house.
Jason: (sarcastically, a bitter smile on his face) Thanks, but guess
again.
Robin jerks forward. She closes her eyes for a split second, then turns
around slowly, shaking her head in disbelief. She looks into his angry eyes.
R: Jason?
J: (mockingly) Robin.
R: (starts to get angry) What are you doing here?
Jax: (from the doorway) That was going to be my question.
Jason stiffens. Robin looks warily at Jason, then at Jax.
J: (leans back onto the couch, deceptively calm) Jax, why dont
you buy a clue? You can afford it.
Jax: (moving further into the room, comes around to face Jason)
Whats that supposed to mean?
J: (laconically) It means, Candyboy, that I dont have to explain
a thing to you.
Jax: (his eyes narrow) Is that so?
R: (pops up from the couch) Listen--
Both ignore her.
J: (diffidently) Yes it is. (tauntingly) You know, Robin and
I were doing just fine now so I dont think your attentions will be
needed anymore. So, you can go now.
Jax: Really! (laughing, crossing his arms) You think you can just
waltz in hear and dismiss me?
J: (smiling dangerously) Cant I?
Jax: (sarcastically) What are you going to do Jason? Have your goons
throw me out?
J: (considering that, then looks at Robin and sees her face) No.
(pause) Why dont you just ask Robin what she wants?
Jax: (turns and looks at Robin, he sees her struggling to stay calm)
Robin.
R: Jax-- I'm sorry but I think you should go for now.
Jax : Are you sure?
R: Yes, (glancing at Jason) it appears I have a few things to clear
up.
Jax: (reluctantly) Fine. But Im going to call you tomorrow.
R: (trying to stay calm) Okay.
Jason looks unthrilled. Robin walks Jax to the door.
R: I want to thank you for dinner, Jax-- and everything else.
Jax: (touches her on the shoulder) It was my pleasure. (purposely
a little loudly) Ill be there any time you need me. (he
leaves)
R: (closes the door behind him, turns back to the living room and sees
Jason is standing, walks back into the room) So, Jason, are you going
to answer my question-- what are you doing here?
J: (turns to look at her his eyes glittering) Oh, were going
to get answers, Robin. To all our questions.
Robin stares straight back at him. The scene fades out.
Scene 18
The hospital. The emergency entrance. Chris comes in carrying Emily. She
is unconscious. He looks around desperately searching for a doctor. He sees
Amy instead.
C: (moving forward) Excuse me?
A: (sees him holding a beat up Emily) Oh My Gosh! (she moves forward
quickly to inspect Emily, sees that she is unconscious, checks her pulse
and looks for injuries on her head) What happened? (Chris shifts under
Emily's weight and Amy leads him to a curtained area) In here.
Chris places Emily gently on a examining table. Amy uses the hospital
phone and pages Dr. Kline. Then she turns back and looks at Emily. She goes
over to her and gently and efficiently begins checking her over. Dr. Kline
comes in. He moves to Emily and begins to examine her.
Dr. K: Whats going on here, Amy?
A: She was just brought in shes unconscious but her pulse is good.
The lesion on her head probably needs stitches. And all other cuts and bruises
appear to be superficial.
Dr. K: (while working on her) She wasnt brought in by ambulance?
A: (looking over at Chris) No?
C: Look, she was attacked on the docks, (runs his fingers through his
hair) Im new in town-- I didnt see any phones and there was
no one around. So I tried to catch a cab. But I guess we looked odd and no
one wanted to stop. Finally this chick stopped and she brought us to the
hospital in a hurry.
A: Where is she?
C: Outside dealing with a cop. (looks at his watch) Holy Shit!!
A: Hey--
C: Look, I need to get to a phone right now!
A: Phone-- (she remembers what she originally needed to do) Oh My
Gosh! (she starts to rush out)
C: Hey!
Amy pops out of the partitioned area and collides with Bobbie.
B: Amy!!! (pause) Have you--
A: Not yet, I--
B: What!?! Forget it! Ill take care of it! (she moves away
rapidly)
A: But Bobbie-- (Bobbie has already left) Arrrrggggh! Ahhhhh!!!
(realizes she needs to beep Monica and Alan and moves to do so)
The scene fades out.
Scene 19
Robins house.
R: (walks closer to Jason and crosses her arms) Jason ,as far as Im
concerned youve lost your right to demand answers from me.
J: Yeah?
R: Yes. And as for what youre doing here dont bother, I can guess.
Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb. (sarcastically) I thought they were
for my protection, Jason? I didnt know they were also going to harass
my friends and spy on me.
J: Your friends, you mean like your new best friend Jax?
Robin just stares at him.
J: Whats going on here, Robin?
R: Arent you listening to me, Jason, you have no right--
J: (softly) I have every right.
R: (just as quietly) I came to you and I begged you. I risked everything
we had and asked you to leave this life behind. (voice breaking) The
life that just finished killing Sonny. (Jason winces) And you said
you wouldnt-- couldnt, whatever. You made your choice then. So
Im making my choices now.
J: (sneering) Choices like involving yourself with Jax?
R: I cant do this anymore ,Jason. I cant... I cant keep
going through all this...
J: (gently) Robin. I dont want to hurt you. I never did. I would
do anything--
R: (yelling) Stop it! Stop saying that! Its not true! You know
the only thing I ever really wanted-- and you refused to give it to me!
J: (pained, swallows) I know.
They stand for a minute staring at each other. Jason walks to stand in
front of Robin. She is looking at the floor. He reaches out slowly as almost
not to scare her and lifts her chin and looks into her eyes.
J: You can tell me I have no right, Robin. You can scream it at me over and
over. And itll...itll tear at my heart but it wont make
a difference... Where ever you are... Ill worry. Who ever your with
Ill -- (clenches his jaw) I didnt know it would be this
way... We said we were connected but I didnt know it would be like
this... (Robin has tears in her eyes and Jason sees them) Dont,
Robin, please... dont. (tenderly wipes the tears from her face)
R: (painfully) I would give anything to be able to forget that Im
not supposed to be in your arms right now.
J: (tenderly whispering) I can give you that.
The song "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" starts playing in the background.
He pulls her close, his fingers running through her hair, and kisses her
lips softly. He kisses the corners of her lips. He kisses her eyes closed.
She sighs and tries to hold herself back. He runs his hands down her back
and pulls her even closer. She moans softly and melts against him. He can
feel her heart beating through her clothes. Jason's heart starts beating
faster in turn. He lifts her up and moves her to the couch. He sits her in
his lap and her arms move around him to pull his face closer to hers. The
scene fades out.
Scene 20
The Hospital. AJ is walking down the corridor. He has come back to the
hospital to help Keesha with a patient she suspects is an alcoholic. He
isnt sure hes been much help but Keesha says she appreciates
the effort. He is giving serious thought to going back to school, he likes
working with people on their problems. Maybe working with kids... He walks
distractedly to the nurses station and stops to check his schedule for the
following day, when he sees Amy rushing towards him.
A: AJ, they told me you were here.
AJ: Amy, whats up?
A: Its ...Emily, AJ.
AJ: Emily? Whats happened to Emily!?
A: She was brought in, she was-- attacked--
AJ: What! Oh my God, where is she?
A: Downstairs in trauma four. Shes resting comfortably--
AJ rushes to the elevator. When he presses the button and nothing happens,
he turns and goes down the stairs instead.
The ER. Bobbie is on the phone. She is waiting for someone to answer,
when no one does she slams the phone down in frustration. She cant
believe Felicia isn't home. She frowns and starts dialing again. AJ comes
barreling down the stairs. He sees Bobbie and rushes to her.
AJ: Where is she?
B: What? (she stops dialing)
AJ: Emily, where is she?
B: (compassionately) Trauma four, its around the corner to the
right.
AJ sprints in that direction. Bobbie determinedly starts dialing again.
A few feet away you see Chris standing at a bank of phones impatiently talking
to an operator.
C: Look, I need the number for the Port Charles Hotel. Yeah, can you just
dial it for me? I dont care about the extra charge, just do it now!
Amy sees him and goes over to him.
A: (tapping him on the shoulder) Excuse me?
Chris ignores her. The phone is ringing.
P: Hello, Port Charles Hotel. Good evening. How may I help you?
C: Can you put me through to Jason Morgans room?
A: (impatiently) Listen, we have to check you over to-- That cut on
your head and the bruises on your hands...
C: (to Amy) Flake off. (back into the phone) No, not you...
What do you mean, no one's
answering? What... wait-- (dial tone) (confused) Whats going
on here?
A: Done? Good. Lets go.
Amy drags him off. The scene fades out.
Scene 21
Robins House.
J: (tenderly whispering) I can give you that.
He pulls her close, his fingers running through her hair, and kisses her
lips softly. He kisses the corners of her lips. He kisses her eyes closed.
She sighs and tries to hold herself back. He runs his hands down her back
and pulls her even closer. She moans softly and melts against him. He can
feel her heart beating . Jasons heart starts beating faster in turn.
He lifts her up and moves her to the couch. He sits her in his lap and her
arms move around him to pull his face closer to hers. Robin pulls back from
him slightly. She is trembling she rests her forehead against his, holds
his face in her hands. Jasons eyes are closed.
R: (breathlessly) We shouldnt--
Jason's eyes snap open.
J: (begging quietly) Dont. (his hands reach up and cup her
face) We both know all the reasons why this is wrong....(smiles at
her and gently pulls her lips closer to his until theyre almost touching
and whispers against them) But why should we always have to do whats
right but feels terrible...
He kisses her, they both forget about anything but each other. They are
locked in that embrace when the phone rings. Robin jumps slightly and starts
to pull back.
J: No, wait...
R: Jason, I have to get that-- (pulls away and starts to stand) my
Uncle Mac said he was going call when he got in.
Robin goes to answer the phone. Jason frowns but waits patiently.
R: Hello? Yes.
She listens for a moment, her eyes widen and the color leaves her face.
She drops the phone. Jason pops up.
J: Robin? (moves to stand next to her) What is it ?
R: No!
J: What? (picks up the phone) Hello? Whos this? Bobbie?
B: Jason? Thank God you're there. I didnt want Robin to be told over
the phone but....
Jason looks over at Robin. She is shaking uncontrollably but doesnt
seem to know what to do. He hugs her to his side.
J: What the hell is going on?
B: Its Mac. Jason, he was shot, you need to get Robin to the hospital
right away--
J: Is he?
B: Just get her here now, Jason.
J: (hangs up the phone) Robin. Come on, honey. Lets go.
R: No. Jason. No!
She starts to fall. Jason catches her and holds her to him.
J: Robin-- look at me. (he cups her face and looks into her eyes)
Look into my eyes, Robin. You dont have to be strong right now, take
your strength from me.
R: (she stares into his eyes for a moment, then snaps back) We have
to go!
J: My car is outside. Lets go.
Jason moves her to the door. He grabs her jacket and they leave the house.
The scene ends.
Scene 22
The Penthouse. The doorbell rings. Lois rouses herself from the couch.
She grumbles to herself slightly as the bell continues to ring insistently.
L: Yeah, yeah. Im comin'. (goes and flings open the door, standing
there is Jax) Jax.
J: You dont seem too surprised to see me, Lois. (smiles briefly
at her)
L: (sighing) No. I was wondering how long youd be able to stay
away.
J: So. Are you going to let me in?
L: I dont know. Its late, Jax ,and Bren's probably sleepin' already
and...
Jax raises an eyebrow. Against her better judgment, she lets him in.
J: I just want to know how she is.
L: (closing the door and turning to look at him) Oh yeah? You coulda
done that over the phone.
J: Yes. I could have. But-- damn it, Lois. I wanted to see her for myself.
L: Jax, I just dont think thats a good idea right now.
J: (running his fingers through his hair) You know there hasnt
been any phase of my relationship with Brenda that someone hasnt been
giving me their opinion on how I should handle her. Stay away, go back, I
think she needs you, you shouldnt see her! And I know shes fragile
right now and I know she probably doesnt want to see me but ...I wish
she could make that choice for herself!
B: (from the top of the stairs) She can.
Jax's head swivels to the top of the stairs. His eyes widen in shock.
Brenda is rail thin. She has bags under her eyes. She looks like she can
barely stand up.
J: Brenda. What do you want me to do?
B: Stay. (smiles painfully) Help me to the couch?
Jax moves to sprint up the stairs. He tenderly wraps his arms around her
and helps her down to the couch. Lois observes this, shakes her head, and
heads to her room, not saying a word.
J: Just tell me what you need, Brenda.
B: Im just so tired, Jax. But I cant sleep.
J: (arranges them on the couch so shes lying on him, grabs an afghan
from the arm of the
couch and covers them) Yes, you can. Ill keep you safe, Brenda.
You can just relax and--
He looks down and sees that she has already fallen asleep. He looks at
her lovingly and with pain in his eyes as the song Angel Standing By, by
Jewel, starts playing in the background.
All through the night Ill be standing over you
All through the night Ill be watching over you
And through bad dreams Ill be right there, baby
Holding your hand, telling you everything is all right
And when you cry Ill be right there
Telling you you were never anything less than beautiful
So dont worry
Im your angel standing by
The scene ends.
End, Book 2, Scene1
The Hospital. AJ runs to the trauma room where Emily is, he arrives panicked,
his heart pounding. She is lying there, sleeping; the bruises are clearly
evident on her pale skin. AJ walks towards her, trembling; he sits next to
her and gently grasps her hand. He is staring at her in disbelief when a
nurse walks in.
AJ: Excuse me but what happened to her exactly?
Nurse: (sighing) Apparently she was attacked on the docks. She was brought
in by the guy who rescued her.
AJ: Was she... Is ...
N: (laying her hand on his shoulder) Shes fine, Mr. Quartermaine.
Her bruises and cuts are for the most part superficial. She did sustain a
nasty blow to her head but were going to run tests as soon as we can
reach Alan.
AJ: (shakes his head disbelievingly) My parents have been contacted?
N: Your mother was here but she's on her way to surgery.
AJ: Thank you.
N: (smiling at him sympathetically) No problem. (she leaves the
room)
AJ turns back to look at Emily. His face is ashen. He sits quietly and
looks up at the ceiling. He wonders what else could go wrong. The scene fades
out.
Book 2, Scene 2
The Hospital. Jason and Robin rush into the emergency room. Robin looks
around agitatedly. She spots Bobbie walking by.
Robin: (voice cracking) Bobbie!
Bobbie: (stops abruptly and looks over at Robin) Robin, thank goodness
you're here. (she walks towards her, then starts leading them both toward
some chairs)
R: (resisting her) I need to see him, Bobbie! Where is he! I need
to see him! I--
B: (firmly) Robin, calm down. You cant see him just yet-- He
needs to go into surgery. Which (pauses) we need you to sign for.
R: Me?
B: Felicia is visiting Mariah with the girls. I called her and she's on her
way, but we have to take action now. So--
R: All right. Whatever he needs, Ill sign for-- (tears fill her
eyes) but ... I need to know...(Jason wraps an arm around her)
B: (taking a breath) Honey. Let's just get the papers signed, the
faster we can do that, the faster he gets the help he needs. Okay?
R: (looking miserable but nodding , determined) Fine.
B: Okay, then. Come with me.
Robin follows her. Jason is startled to see Chris looking anxious, sitting
in the lounge, and approaches him.
Jason: What are you doing here?
Chris: Mr. Morgan, thank God... I heard this girl scream and I brought her
here and...
Jason: Slow down, what girl?
Chris: Your sister, Emily. I think someone attacked her. I stopped him, though,
I had to beat him pretty bad. I left him there, I had to, I ran here with
her as fast as I did.
Jason: No, you did the right thing. Is she okay?
Chris: (distraught) I don't know.
Jason looks around and spots Monica passing through.
Jason: Monica.
Monica: Jason, you're here. You heard about Emily?
Jason: No, Mac. I brought Robin.
Monica: I'm due to assist in surgery, I can't talk long, but Emily's okay.
Some young man rescued her and brought her in here. She's sleeping now.
Chris slumps down in relief and Monica rushes off. Detective Garcia strolls
up to him.
Garcia: Are you the one who brought Emily Quartermaine in?
Chris: Yeah, that's me.
Garcia: Well, we picked up the bum who attacked her and we've got him in
custody. You did quite a number on him.
Chris: I had to. I mean--
Jason: (interrupting) You did the right thing, kid. I won't forget
it.
Chris: Thanks, Mr. Morgan.
Jason: Jason. (walks away)
Garcia watches him go.
Garcia: For once, I agree with him. You stopped that guy and that's what
counts. I need you to file a report, though, so if you'll come with me?
Dazed, Chris follow Detective Garcia.
Book 2, Scene 3
General Hospital. Emily's room. AJ is sitting by her bedside.
AJ: Em, I know you can't hear me but I have some things I want to tell you.
I want to tell you that I promise, from this day forward, to always be there
to take care of you. I should have been there with you this afternoon, and
I wasn't. The Quartermaines... we're a selfish bunch. We get caught up in
our own problems, we don't pay attention when someone else needs us. And
you need us. And you'll never know what it's like to get hurt like this again,
I swear it.
The door opens behind AJ and Edward slips in, with Lila in tow.
Lila: AJ, dearest, we didn't mean to eavesdrop, but I'm glad we did. What
you said goes for all of us.
AJ: I hope so, Grandmother.
Edward gazes down at Emily, touching her hair softly.
Edward: I always wanted a little girl like Emily around the house. (smiles
at Lila fondly) And even though you're not so little anymore, I'm not
about to let anything ruin what you've brought to this family.
Emily begins to wake up.
Emily: Grandfather...
Edward: We're here, Emily.
Emily: Where's...
AJ: Mom and Dad are in surgery, there's... well, that doesn't matter. They
send their love. How do you feel?
Emily: Scared... who...
Edward: A mugger. They caught him. But the important thing is, Emily, you
gave us a scare. Don't ever do that again. This family... well, I think we'd
fall apart without you.
Emily smiles and drifts off into a much more peaceful sleep. AJ leaves
the room, to bump into Gina.
AJ: Gina.. wow, I'm really glad to see you, but you didn't have to come down
here.
Gina: I know, but you sounded so upset when you called. How's your sister?
AJ: She's okay now.
Gina: Good. I just... I know how that feels.
AJ puts an arm around her as they walk away.
AJ: I think you do. And I think that's only the first thing you and I are
going to have in common.
They turn a corner and come across Jason.
AJ: Jason, are you looking for Emily?
Jason: Yeah. Is she awake?
AJ: Yeah, she is, she's fine. Grandmother and Grandfather are in with her.
Jason: I'll wait, then. Gina, hi.
Gina: Hi, Jason.
Jason: Mac Scorpio got shot.
AJ: What? How?
Jason: Some sort of robbery at the Port Charles airport.
AJ: Is he gonna make it?
Jason: He just got out of surgery. Robin's in there with him, but he's not
awake yet.
Gina: So, you're here with Robin?
Jason says nothing and looks away. AJ gives Gina a quick nod and she steps
away.
AJ: Look, Jason, I know you don't want advice from me.
Jason: You're right. I don't.
AJ: And I don't care. I know you chose your business over Robin. I know you
feel you had to. But you choose her this time. You choose her, because she
needs you.
AJ walks away, Jason stares through the glass into Mac's hospital room.
Book 2, Scene 3
Hours later, Mac's room. Robin is kneeling by his bed, her head in her
hands. As she looks up we see she is crying.
Robin: How could you let this happen? Here you were, always lecturing me
about being safe and you go off and get shot. Don't you know how much I need
you? I've lost everybody, but I never thought I could lose you... I always
knew I could lose Sonny, I knew the life he led might take him from the people
who love him, but not you! I can't stand losing you. Don't you give up on
me...
She starts crying uncontrollably, and Felicia dashes into the room.
Felicia: God, no...
Robin clutches her and they hold on to each other for dear life.
Felicia: I got back... as soon as I could... the plane... but I should've
been here...
Robin: It's okay, you're here now.
Felicia: but, but, is he okay? Is he alright?
Robin; They don't know. Not until he wakes up. They don't know anything.
Mac: And even then, they don't know anything.
Robin and Felicia turn around with a gasp. Mac's eyes are blearily open,
and he looks terribly weak but is smiling. Felicia sinks down next to him.
Felicia: Oh God, thank God...
Robin: (smiling through her tears) We were so scared...
Mac: Me too. But I'm fine.
Felicia: No, you're not.
She presses the call button and Bobbie and Monica burst into the room,
stopping short and grinning.
Bobbie: Well, isn't that a sight for sore eyes.
Monica looks at the instruments measuring Mac's vitals and looks relieved.
Monica: You're looking good. I'll need to run a few tests...
Felicia: I'm not going anywhere.
Mac smiles, looking tired.
Monica: That's fine. But I wouldn't worry-- I think we have a miracle on
our hands.
Robin: Uncle Mac, don't you ever scare me like this again.
Mac: I never wanted to in the first place.
Robin: (kissing his forehead) I love you.
Mac: I love you, too.
Robin and Felicia share a quick hug, and Robin leaves the room to find
Jason waiting for her.
Jason: Is he okay? I saw Bobbie and Monica go running in...
Robin: (wiping her tears) He's fine. He's going to be fine.
Jason: I'm glad. (pause) Robin, there are some things I want to say
to you.
Robin: I know, me too.
Jason: Would you go back to the penthouse with me? I want to check on Brenda.
Robin: Okay.
Book 2, Scene 4
The penthouse. Robin and Jason come in to see Lois, Brenda, and Jax sitting
on the sofa. There are suitcases packed by the door.
Lois: Robin, honey we heard about mac on the news... he's really okay?
Robin: He's going to be fine. Felicia is there with him.
Jax: Good, that'll cure him for sure.
Robin: Brenda, how are you doing.
Brenda smiles weakly.
Brenda: Lousy, you know. But... (glances back at Jax and Lois) I've
made a decision.
Robin: A decision?
Brenda: Yeah... I'm going to leave Port Charles for awhile. With Lois. I
think... I think I need to get away from here for awhile. Everything just
reminds me of Sonny.
Jax: I have plenty of business in New York, I'll be spending most of my time
there.
Lois: And I know that spending some time with your goddaughter will cheer
you up, if nothing else will.
Robin glances back at Jason, who says nothing.
Robin: Whatever you need is fine with me.
Brenda: I know. But I know losing Sonny has hurt you too, and I've been
selfish... and as long as I'm here, you'll be taking care of me instead of
yourself.
Robin: I'm okay, Brenda--
Brenda: No, you're not. You don't have to be. If I were a better friend I
could help you get through this, too. As it is I feel terrible that I'm going
to leave you alone.
Robin smiles.
Robin: I won't be alone.
Brenda looks over at Jason and crosses to stand in front of him.
Brenda: Jason, I want to thank you for everything you've done for me, and
for Sonny.
Jason: He was my best friend. You don't need to thank me.
Robin: He means, you're welcome.
Jason: (smiling) Robin's right. you're welcome.
Jax: (glancing warily at Jason) Robin, you call me if you ever need anything.
Robin: I will, thank you.
Brenda, Lois, and Jax say goodbye, leaving Jason and Robin alone.
Robin: Jason--
Jason: No, let me say something first. Robin, I haven't been there for you
the way I should have. Watching you with Mac today, I think I understand
how scared you've been.
Robin: I can't bear to lose either one of you that way.
Jason: I know. I may be willing to take certain risks with my life, but it's
not fair of me to do that to you. Because part of my life belongs to you,
too.
Robin: But you can't just leave the organization.
Jason sighs and sits down on the couch, motioning for Robin to join him.
Jason: No, I can't. I'm in too seep. But I guess I want you to know that
I would, if I could. And that I promise to do anything I can to stay alive,
for you.
Robin: And for you.
Jason: And for myself. But mostly, I never want to cause you the kind of
pain I saw you in today.
Robin reaches out to him and he holds her as she cries out her tension
and frustration.
Jason: I understand if you can't accept--
Robin sits up, wiping her eyes.
Robin: I do, Jason. I do accept you, just as you are. I can't stand to lose
you and yet I've been pushing you away. I won't do it anymore.
Jason: If you're sure--
Robin: I am. We'll both try to stay safe, and to stay alive. And we'll love
each other as long as we can.
Jason: Forever.
Slowly, Jason takes her in his arms once more and kisses her, tears forming
in his own eyes.
Jason: Don't ever leave me again.
Robin: (kissing him back) I won't I promise.
The end.
