Wow! Is this picture amazing or what!

This is how I first came across Ewan, in his role as Mark Renton in Trainspotting. He captivated me with his acting skills and that amazing accent of his.

Obviously I had to see him again. With the help of my amazing research skills, I discovered that he was in another film by the name of "Shallow Grave".

A gruesome tale, to be sure, but I enjoyed nothing more than Ewan's knowing and satisfied grin at the end of the movie. What a sly fellow he is! The movie was headed by the team who created "Trainspotting": Danny Boyle, John Hodge, Andrew MacDonald and of course Ewan.

After seeing Shallow Grave and Trainspotting, I knew I was hooked on Ewan. I was lucky enough to find an English television series he starred in at my local video store. "Lipstick on Your Collar" was pure British humor, I enjoyed it. Ewan was rather young, but he did an amazing job, as always.

This is Ewan in "Brassed Off", the next film I saw him in. He played Andy, a euphonium player in the town's brass band as well as a miner. I read somewhere that he actually played the instrument. He also plays the drums, although, not in the film.

In "Emma" he played Frank Churchill, an English rogue, opposite Gwyneth Paltrow. I had seen "Emma" in the theater, but hadn't know about Ewan then, unfortunately. I made up for that, however, by buying the movie when it came out on video. I didn't buy it just because of Ewan, though, I enjoy the movie a lot.

After waiting quite some time for his next film "A Life Less Ordinary", I was rewarded by a very enjoyable movie. I have never seen Ewan more hilarious than he is in this movie. For my review of this movie, "Emma", "Trainspotting" and a bunch of others, check out My Movie Page

I finally saw Nightwatch, which is a suspense thriller where Ewan uses an American accent and it sounded great! Why anyone would want to change his accent, though, even for the sake of a movie, is beyond me. The movie was pretty good and certainly not as gory as I had heard it was going to be. There are a few bad parts, but I've seen worse. It certainly keeps you guessing, though.

His role in Little Voice is utterly charming. He plays Billy, a quiet, pigeon loving, telephone wiring young man who finds himself intrigued by LV (Little Voice). I feel that this role is a perfect example of how versatile he is. He can change from being a heroin junkie to a shy pigeon lover with what seems like little effort. It seems to come so naturally to him.

Even playing a wild rock 'n' roller modled after Iggy Pop seems easy for Ewan. He pulls this role off fabulously in Velvet Goldmine despite the slow pace of the film. He just lets it all hang out, literally. But most Ewan lovers know that he isn't quite shy about that sort of thing.

Rogue Trader, which was only released on cable and now on video in the U.S. was another enjoyable film. The movie is a true story about Nick Leeson, a trader on the stock market who caused Barrings Bank to go bankrupt. Ewan is absolutely covincing, which is nothing new. It's easy to read and feel his panic as he makes the wrong decisions and loses more and more money.

His role as Obi Wan in The Phantom Menace is one I'm sure most people have seen. I very much enjoyed seeing Ewan, of course, but I wasn't too impressed by the movie. I thought his talent could have been much better utilized. He's capable of much more than just standing around with a serious, contemplating look on his face. But I guess that's what the role called for.

One of his films, which I'd been waiting forever to see is Blue Juice, an English surfing film (yeah, not the ideal spot for surfers). Catherine Zeta Jones stars in this film, along with Sean Pertwee who is involved in Natural Nylon with Ewan. It's amusing that the cover art on the box shows Ewan and Catherine, when really Sean is the main character. Obviously it has to do with popularity. Anyway, if you like Ewan, you'll like this film. I found him absolutely hilarious. He plays another junkie, though his character isn't as severe as Renton. He can't seem to do anything right, and he's not very nice to his friends. But don't worry, he learns his lesson, as everybody does in this film. Obviously I've seen better films, but check it out.

Ah yes, Moulin Rouge. Of course I saw it when it first came out in theaters and again about a week later. I bought the soundtrack as soon as it came out so I could listen to Ewan's beautiful voice all day. I visited the Moulin Rouge web site every day so I could watch all of the great extras. It is such a unique movie, a feast for the eyes, most of that feast being Ewan, of course. The great thing about this movie is, it secures Ewan's versatility. It's proof of what a great actor he is, that he can do anything. In this one movie we see him expressing almost every emotion there is. He shows us humor, anger, happiness, despair, and love in such a fantastic way with his subtle facial expressions, one would never guess that he was acting. It's a movie worth several viewings, especially on DVD (don't miss all the extras), and unfortunately it didn't get as much recognition as it deserved at the Academy Awards.

I had been waiting to see Nora for quite some time. Luckily I've got a friend who works at a video store and he lent me a screener copy. I knew I would enjoy it no matter what because Ewan is in it and because I was an English major in college and therefore somewhat interested in James Joyce, but I had read some less than favorable reviews, so I wasn't sure how good it would actually be. So, it turned out not being my favorite Ewan movie, but I enjoyed watching it, and as usual, Ewan did a fabulous job. He always does his characters such justice...actually, that is beyond an understatement. He becomes his characters and he became James Joyce. The movie seemed a little long, but overall, it was well done.
