It was a hot afternoon in July of 1995. Graduating from college at The American University in Washington, D.C. barely 2 months before, I was starting to get restless. I needed to get away from the city--and I wanted to hit the road. I was in a bookstore and happened to pick up a "great drives" book and started looking for a quick place to drive to spend the weekend. The page flipped to "Tennessee," and by sheer chance, it turned out that Elvis Week 1995 was only a week away. That was it! It was fate! I HAD to go!

I have to tell you that I LOVED Graceland. We bought our total inclusive tickets (which included admission to Elvis' car museum, a tour of his private jets, a special museum with rare memorabilia, and of course, the mansion tour. The best thing about Graceland, though, has to be the people. Everyone was soooo nice. I have never met so many polite and considerate people anywhere. Elvis' home attracts millions of visitors a year, and it's easy to see why. Since it was Elvis Week, there were HUGE celebrations going on, and fans were swarming everywhere carrying flowers, teddy bears, candles and photographs. For instance, we sat in the parking lot and listened to an Elvis Impersonator fest that lasted for 24 hours straight!

The mansion is amazing. For some excellent photographs from inside Elvis' home, please visit the Graceland Tour web site. I've always said that EVERYBODY in America should go see Graceland. If you have never been, you really should go. I wasn't even an Elvis fan before I went, but now I definitely am!
