Episode 16: All Good Things...
Air Date:
...must end
Executive Director Susan Langdon, and designers Serena DeParis and Crystal Siemens are out on the factory floor of the
Toronto Fashion Incubator, waiting for IBM's Tom Vassos to drop by for his weekly visit. However, when he does arrive, Tom unexpectedly announces that he has no more to teach them-- after fifteen weeks of exploring the Internet and computing technologies, they now know enough to be able to successfully apply what they've learned to their small businesses. As an example, Tom pulls out a
letter that the three wrote before joining "This New SoHo", which outlined the business activities that they thought the Internet and computing technologies could assist them with. The letter is broken down into the various stages of production, including design of the new collection, marketing, production cutting and sewing, and finding sources of financing. As he goes through this letter, Tom points out which activities are a good fit with the Internet (the majority of the service and support tasks), and which ones are not (such as activities directly related to production of the clothing). Looking through the list of good fits, Tom also notes that many of the activities can be achieved with what they have learned so far, if they have not been done already.Susan, Serena, and Crystal also take this opportunity to reflect on how the past fifteen weeks have changed their perspective on the Internet and computing technologies. Not only are they more comfortable with using the Internet and the TFI's new computer, but the experience has helped expand on what they thought was possible with the Internet. Some specific examples of how they have altered their business processes to make use of what they have learned:
Tom closes by telling the fashion trio that they've made an excellent start. They've begun applying what they have learned over the past few weeks, but now is the time that they should 'get their hands dirty' and actually try it on their own. Though success won't come overnight, with a little bit of effort, the investment they make today in working with the technology will reap rewards in the future.
Epilogue
With his job done, Tom zips up his cool new leather jacket (a Serena DeParis design, no less) and revs up his motorcycle, parked outside the front door of the TFI. In a haze of dust and the screeching of tires, the International Man of Internet Consulting races off into the sunset, off to his next assignment...
"Do you think we'll ever see him again?" Serena says, turning to Crystal.
"You never know..." Crystal replies as she watches the distant figure on the motorcycle blend into the horizon.
