Pasadena Unified School District
operates 5 High Schools, 3 Middle Schools, and 22 Elementary Schools, serving nearly 23,000 students and employing nearly 1,100 certified staff, including 60 in pupil services (counseling, speech/language, etc.). The district offers a number of Programs, both on its own and in conjunction with school partners and other organizations. The "Young and Healthy" project provides medical and dental care to low-income, uninsured children and youths. At the high school level, partnership academies, most emphasizing career exploration and preparation, include the Business & Technology Academy, Health Academy, Business/Finance, GeoSpace (math-oriented), and Computer Careers Academy. College preparation programs include the Puente Project, Upward Bound, and the California State University Los Angeles Partnership. AP and Honors courses in a variety of subjects are offered. A variety of extracurricular activities, ranging from sports to clubs to music & band, are available to high school and middle school students. At the middle school level, the curriculum emphasizes the core academic subjects, as well as art and music. Grant funded programs such as Project SEED (a science-oriented project) supplement the curriculum. In the elementary schools, Programs address student needs at individual schools, and some, such as the "Writing to Read" program, emphasize literacy in the primary grades. Many of the district's elementary schools use the Success for All Reading Program and MathWings curriculum. The school district offers its facilities for the Park District's after-school programs, and the YWCA's school-aged child care program. At all grade levels, the district offers Bilingual and ESL programs, Gifted & Talented Education (G.A.T.E.), and Special Education, including Early Childhood for special needs and "at-risk" preschoolers. Health Academy -
Prepares students for advanced careers in health care-including the medical and dental professions through program partners Cal. State Dept. of Education, Huntington Memorial Hospital, Job Training Partnership, Kaiser Permanente, St. Luke Medical Center, L.A. County ROP, Occidental College, and Project Pay.ELD (English Language Development) -This second language acquisition program has in operation for 15 years and recently conducted a Video Teleconferencing CU-SeeMe with other schools across the world.
Mock Trial - A program that gives students a chance to develop and demonstrate oratorical skills in a mock court setting, and holds an annual competition with other schools.
Odyssey of the Mind - A program giving students an opportunity to show their ability to apply ideas and concepts.
Physics Bowl - For students interested in inter-scholastic academic competition about physics.
Puente Project - A program aimed at Latino students (but open to all) which provides support for success in high school and preparation for college.
ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corps) - For students interested in the military.
Science Bowl - For students interested in projects and science contests. Emphasis on computer science, math, physics, biology, chemistry, astronomy, and environmental science.
Tech Prep - A special Math/Science program providing assistance for students who plan to attend Pasadena City College. Focus on engineering/physics, biology/chemistry, and math.
Upward Bound Programs - Based at Cal State L.A. and Pasadena City College. College prep opportunity for students through after school and Saturday tutorial classes and a six week summer program.

Alternative Programs at Rose City High School
1) For high school students 16 years of age and over - four daily instructional periods. Three components: A) For the student to complete his or her high school education either by earning a school diploma, a district diploma, the GED or the State of California High School Proficiency Examination Certificate. B) Instruction in skills needed for finding, getting, and keeping a job. C) Independent Study in the afternoon for students who are close to graduating (20 additional units).
2) The Intermediate Opportunity Program for high school students 15 years of age and younger - four periods of instruction daily, English, Social Science, Math, and Science. Focus is on discipline and work habits. The goal is for students to succeed in a comprehensive high school.
3) The African American/Latino Alternative Education Program, a self contained classroom, emphasizes experiential learning and gaining reading comprehension, writing, analytical and communication skills. Focus is on supporting students in their ability to transition from school to work or to higher or vocational education. Emphasis is also on career development and entrepreneurial development learning activities, including frequent field trips. Team teaching is a major feature of this program.
4) Independent Study Program: Students work at their own pace in order to complete as many units as possible. Most students come to school once a week to meet with the teacher, turn in the previous week's work and get assignments for the next week. Assignments are corrected the week the work is turned in and returned to the student. Some students, who are 16 years of age or older and need additional units to graduate, will attend the regular program in the morning and participate in the independent study program in the afternoon.
