A Restaurant Eater's Checklist

When you eat out "all around town," use the following checklist as your guide:

1.Have an eating plan and stick to it! Select the kinds and amounts of food that best fit this plan.

2.Pass up all-you-can-eat specials, buffets, and unlimited salad bars.

3.Eat your lower-calorie foods first. Salad is a good choice.

4.Stop eating before you feel full. Ask to take home the food left on your plate.

5.Watch the amount of alcohol you drink, preferably no more than one alcoholic drink per day. Alcohol provides many calories with no nutrients, and it tends to increase the appetite, resulting in overeating. Try mineral water or club soda with a twist of lemon or lime instead.

6.If you choose a higher-fat entree, balance it with lower-fat choices for the rest of the meal.

7.If you know that one of your meals will be rich, be especially careful to eat lowfat foods at other mealtimes that day.
