ROUND 46; MATCH 5; OCTOBER 25, 1998
The fifth match of this round was close throughout and low scoring.
The final margin was 12 IMPS (56-44) but the first half was 16-8!
Lloyd remained winless (following his undefeated last round).
Herb was absent as Bill substituted.
What do you bid if partner opens 2C, strong and artificial?

Even though I play 2NT 8-10 or 8+ with most people and control
showing with others, I decided to wait with 2D and soon regretted it.
Partner bid 3C and now I couldn't bid 3D as that would be the second negative (?).
So, I bid 3H, and heard Bill bid 4NT (?).
I bid 5C (no aces or 1 keycard!) affraid that I had underbid these cards and he would pass.
He bid 6C nonetheless and we pushed the board.
The reason I don't like to bid 2NT is twofold:
a. Partner's hand should take the lead better.
2. I hoped to hear him bid at the 2-level and clarify.

Today's tip(s):
Don't bid a slam if you know the opponents will take the sacrifice!
(When the game points are worth more than the penalty.)
