Take
a Hike
The
picture at the top of this page is the Franconia Range in Franconia Notch,
New Hampshire. You are looking at, from left to right, Mts. Lafayette,
Lincoln, Liberty, and Flume. Across the street from this range is the Kinsman
Range which includes Cannon Mountain and its famous gondola.

Cannon
Mountain is also famous for The Old Man of the Mountains, also known as
The Great Stone Face, a natural rock formation in the cliffs that resembles
the profile of a man.

This
is "God's" Country. It is an area of incredible natural beauty as well
as an area that has some fabulous hiking. Now, I know a lot of you who
are used to hiking in the Rocky Mountains or the Cascades might sneer at
the thought of climbing mountains in New Hampshire, the highest of which
is Mt. Washington at 6,288 feet above sea level which has several distinctions.
. .the most dangerous little mountain in the world, the home of the world's
worst weather, and the highest wind speed ever recorded - 231 miles per
hour. Well, New Hampshire mountains may not be as high as the Rockies,
but they have hiking trails that will challenge the most ardent hikers
as well as some beautiful trails for those who just want a quiet stroll
through some beautiful woods.
Now,
for those of you who wonder why anybody would want to hike and climb mountains,
the answer is really easy. It is good for the body and the soul. The smell
of fresh mountain air will make your spirits soar, and the views from the
tops of the mountains will make you wish you were a poet or an artist so
that you could capture the moment and the scene, especially if you hike
during foliage season when you will be rewarded with the sight of acre
after acre of reds, yellows and golds from the various deciduous trees
that are indigenous to New England, interspersed with the green of the
many varieties of evergreen trees that grow in the area. It is truly a
sight to behold. While you were climbing you were probably huffing and
puffing, wondering if your legs would carry you up the mountain. Well,
you were doing some wonderful things for your body. You were improving
your aerobic capacity while gaining muscle strength in your legs, and if
you were using this as a means to help shed a few pounds, you were burning
calories galore. This was a win/win situation.
Don't
take my word for it, though. Take a hike and see for yourself. If you want
