The Malta Union of Midwives & Nurses enjoys the sole-recognition of all the Nurses and Midwives working in Malta and Gozo.
This Union is an extension from the Malta Union of Midwives which was set up in 1990. After an agreement on the 19th of September 1996, the nurses and midwives joined in one Union and the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses was born, MUMN for short. In a short time-span, 12 months, it gained the sole-representation of Nurses while that of midwives was already gained by the first union in the first place.
Although the MUMN is a worker`s trade union, it is its duty to educate its members by organising seminars and courses concerning nursing and midwifery themes. Every three months the Union publishes its own journal which is sent to every member`s home. Apart from Union articles, other contributions to the journal include degree papers written by nurses and midwives, and articles about hobbies, sports and jokes.
Today, the MUMN has 1255 members from a total of 1600 nurses and midwives registered in Malta. This number is very encouraging considering the small spell of time it only took to organise itself.
The Union`s premises are in Vjal Cottoner, Fgura. These premises were officially opened on the 22nd November, 1997, by the Hon. Prime Minister Dr. Alfred Sant in the presence of the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Dr. Eddie Fenech Adami.
The MUMN is set up primarily with its Executive Committee made up of 9 members. The President is Mr. Rudolph Cini while the General Secretary is Mr. Colin Galea. The Vice President who is also a midwife is Ms. Carmen Waring. Apart from the Executive Committee the MUMN has a sub-committee in every hospital including that of Gozo, Zammit Clapp Hospital and the private hospitals. A sub-committee is responsible for the setup of the Union`s journal , while others have direct responsibility for discipline and entertainment. The Chairpersons of every sub-committee are entitled to attend the Executive Committee`s meetings so as they can serve as a communication link between their sub-committee and the Executive Committee. These meetings are held every fortnight.
The MUMN is now seeking contacts abroad with other Unions who may be interested in communicating with this Union. Next June a three strong delegation will be attending the International Labour Office (ILO) to seek contacts and get familiar to the place. Altough this Union is a trade union, it is important to bear
in mind that we are dealing with patients and not machines. The Union is looking forward for the next collective agreement with the Government which will give nurses and midwives better conditions of work and increase in salaries in the near future.
