Bill'sWorld, circa 1997 - 1998

In 1979, my formal schooling awarded me with a Bachelor of Science, Mechanical Engineering, from the University of Detroit. I designed some interesting mechanisms and test stands for many years in corporate R & D. In spite of my technical background, I also managed to learn some writing and punctuation skills. Over the last few years I have been involved with contract writing, computer consulting (including hardware/software testing), and teaching. The third graders at King's Mountain Elementary love it when I am a special visitor.

In the last two years, I have also been designing web sites, and teaching others how to build their own web pages -- including lessons in scanning and PhotoShop. When called upon, I also install networks, modems, cards, RAM, and hard disks. As a byproduct of this, I'm adept at configuring new setups, and bringing systems back from the dead. I once repaired a PowerBook that had sulfuric acid dumped into it; that one surprised even me.

On the author side, I have written articles for several Macintosh user group newsletters. I've also been an author for InfoWorld, Multimedia World, PC World, and Macworld magazines. I am currently working on assignments for Computer Currents, but nothing has appeared in print yet. My topics have ranged from simple software reviews, to complex hardware reviews of personal and office printers. Most of my writing has been for PC World magazine, followed by Macworld. While I am a Macintosh kind of guy (I worked as an engineer in Apple's Imaging Division for five years) I have found that the reality of making a living as a computer consultant means knowing the PC.

So, when PC World was shopping around for a printer author some time ago, they found me. Soon, I was deep into the PC again, almost nine years after doing finite element analysis on a mainframe with a 286 front end. Wow. Before long, I realized just how much I love and admire the Mac after installing, configuring, and using Windows 3.x and Windows 95. I believe Apple will pull out of their tailspins, because I -- and many other PC users -- still believe in the magic of the Macintosh and what Apple has done to make personal computing what it is today.
