1st Generation (NA) Spotting Tips
(How to tell one year from another 90-97)
- 1. Look at the dash for the number of airbags.
- Driver side airbag only (90 - 93) [go to #2]
- Dual airbags (94 - 97) [skip to #4]
- 2. Look at the wheels (90 - 93).
- 93 - Only year to have wheel center caps with "diamond in circle" logo
- 92 - Only year to have wheel center caps with "Mazda" print and a rear subframe brace under rear of car
- 3. Look at instrument panel:
- 91 - Has a pair of warning lights flanking the square information screen at the botom center of the insrutument panel and no rear subframe brace.
- 90 - Only year that Doesn't have the warning lights on the insrument panel.
- Early 90 - Has gloss finish on soft top latches.
- 4. Dual Airbags (94 - 97).
- 5. Look at sunvisors
- 94 - Only year to have folding sunvisors with dual airbags
- 95 - Only year to have one piece sunvisors and a rear view mirror
mounted on the header bow
- 6. Look at rear view mirror and door panel
- 96 - Only year to have mirror mounted on windsheild and door panel without extra shoulder padding added in '97
- 97 - Only year to have door panels with built-up
shoulder padding. '99 redesigned the whole door.
