While Honda hybrids and turboed Acuras reign as King of the Hill, there are some whose willingness to persevere with what they have known for years is what brings them success. Jojo Rumbaoa of Hayward, California is one who has always believed in Toyotas. He's been a veteran of the Import modification scene for over 21 years and has practiced his craft with many old school Toyotas since his younger days in the Philippines, where a lot of the old school tradition was founded.

Jojo's car is quite unorthodox for an old school street warrior. Starting off with your basic Toyota 2TG/3TG hybrid motor, a 1600cc twin cam motor from Japan, and boring it out some for more displacement, it was installed into a 1981 Toyota Corolla. Not a very sporty looking car if you try to remember what those look like, but with intense motorwork and aggressive exterior modifications added on, this unusual choice of platform was transformed into a hardcore street blazing terror.

The motor has been fortified with Venolia 8:1 pistons, Carillo rods and ARP headstuds to start things off. This run of the mill 2TG has its differences when compared to how most old school Toyotas are built. Trying to keep up with the latest in technology, Jojo shied away from using the dual carburetor setup and decided that to feed the fuel a more efficient way to do it was in order. He utilized the TWM individual throttle body fuel injection system to provide ample fuel needs. To increase fuel output, the fuel system incorporates a set of RC Engineering 550 injectors.

Wondering why this old school needs so much fuel? Well, it's probably because this unsuspecting Toyota is actually forced induced. It all begins with the Toysport custom turbo manifold, which is connected to a turbocharger to provide the awesome power this monster in disguise is capable of. Aside from that, the head has been done up and has received 46mm intake valves and 40mm on the exhaust side. Exhaust gases are routed through a custom three-inch mandrel exhaust system while turbo support comes from an HKS blowoff valve, HKS EVC controller and a Turbonetics wastegate. The fuel curve and ignition timings are precisely controlled by an Electromotive Tech II while the Autometer and Greddy gauges provide the information needed when driving such a project.

To keep power to the wheels, a TRD Limited Slip was installed while an 8.5 pound flywheel was placed with the tranny's six-puck kevlar clutch. A TRD 4:3 ring and pinion final drive was used for all-around driving situations.

To give the motor a strong dose of lubrication, a TRD High Flo oil pump was given the job to withstand the harshness of high output racing motors. The motor was built by Nathan Gerolamy while installation and tuning of that beast was given to none other than Mr. Old School King himself, Dennis Liongson of LDL SPEEDSHOP in Fremont, California.

The exterior was spiced up with a bright and extremely shiny yellow paint job, fender flares, red with chromed lipped 16x7 Fortran three-piece wheels, front air dam, and a four headlight euro conversion kit. The suspension was upgraded using TRD racing springs and five-way adjustable shocks.

For more driver safety and chassis rigidity, an Autopower rollbar was installed. For driver comfort, a set of Momo seats, shiftknob and steering wheel took place of the stock pieces. Lastly, to stop this thing from ungodly speeds, a rear disk brake conversion was added to aid in hard stopping. Future add-ons are to replace the stock transmission with a G-force tranny. Other than that, I'm sure you get a clue of what went into creating this old school powerhouse.

So if you see this thing on the road, don't forget to never underestimate the power of the OG's. They are full of surprises and you wouldn't want to be the Turbo Civic who just didn't know.
