There's no doubt about it, Ed Funk is a Saab Man. Here's a few shots
of Ed's interests then and now. If Matisse painted Saabs it would look like
this. Ed remembers his Roach:
Great little car. Sandi had it all fixed up inside with a wooden wheel and reupolstered doors etc. While I was in Viet Nam she got hit very hard broadside. Totaled the car but she walked away. Yet another "Saab saves lives where other cars wouldn't have", story. When we got married '68, I was stationed in Savannah finishing schooling prior to shipping out. We drove The Roach south from PA with all our belongings stuffed in but nowhere to put the 7' whaling harpoon that my brother had given us for a wedding present. Sooo we tied it to the roof and off we went not knowing anything much about appearances. We sure got the looks and stares. The gas station attendant in SC made me put the oil in the tank, he just couldn't bring himself to ruin the motor. Well we had fun with it. On the way back home just a few short months later we had accumulated far to many treasures to pack into The Roach so we rented the largest single axle U-Haul they made at the time packed it full, to include a Triumph 650 Bonniville (that by the way was pushing far more HP than the mighty 750)and up the road we went. No problems with anything, to this day I don't know how that little car did such a workmans job of pulling itself and that load the 800 or so miles it was back home. I must say it was the slowest ride of our lives. Thats it for now.
Ed's got his eye out for another stroker. I think his quest was spurred by
seeing some great looking cars at the Waterville convention. Here's a favorite
shot:
Ed is hoping to find a stroker in the Penn. area. If you know of one drop
him a line at: funx900@yahoo.com
Saab hunt update! Ed has found a 64 2-stroke! He's at that 'I found
it, but I haven't actually seen it yet' stage. Ahh,,, Saab hunting, a continual
series of occassions for hope! Look back again soon for more on Ed's quest.
