Drive a Sonett see the world. A
lot of hard core Saab guys live, breathe, and dream of Sonetts. I can understand
the appeal. Here is one fast, sweet, arcane, little fiberglass sports car.
For me, looking at these pictures of Sonetts makes me feel like the kid with
his nose plastered to the candy shop window. I can gaze longingly at the
multicolored confections, but I can't go in. That's the literal truth. I've
tried to get into these cars. I've contorted my legs in every imaginable
manner, but I just can't fit in the cars. I get close, but I'm just one twist
short of success. I've tried to wedge myself into a Sonett II & III to no
avail. One possible solution was to rig the steering wheel to be quick removable.
Then I could slot myself in and be ready to drive. I'm a long-legged 6'5" and
there is no way short of sawing the top off that I'll fit in these cars.
Which is one of the reasons I have a picture of a custom convertible Sonett
on this page. To my eye this conversion really works. So maybe someday I'll
build that convertible Sonett. Until then I'll have to satisfy the urge by
scrounging for the Sonett R&P gear as the anchor for the transmissions in
my 96 fleet. Ah but the dream lingers....
