And now I turn things over to Mike...

THE SIZZLERS HOTLINE

The Sizzlers Hotline is a venture I started in June of 1994.

My services include but are not restricted to the complete restoration and modification of all Sizzlers, Chopcycles, Earthshakers, and Hotline Trains.

I can take anyone of these, in any condition and turn it from a non-running, heavily corroded, unwanted toy, into a pristine, valuable, running gem.

I have been doing this for my own collection for over three years and believe I am the best in the business.

Some at my services include the following:

CHASSIS REBUILDING

BATTERIES, TYPE-A & B

DECALS

MOTOR REBUILDING

CONTACT FABRICATION

REPAINTING

RECHROMING

REPRODUCTION BODIES & PARTS

I have custom built everything from hood scoops to Fat Daddy wheels and take great care and pride in my work because if I can't please my customers, I don't please myself.

If you ever have any questions regarding Sizzlers feel free to give me a call, as I am always happy to speak with anyone interested in the fastest electric cars in the world...Sizzlers!

NEW & HOT!!

SPECTRA-FLAME Shades by Grove

My Hot Pink is unlike any other Spectra-Flame paint available.

My Hot Pink is a water based acrylic paint.

One bottle should easily paint 15-20 cars depending upon application and matches the original die cast Hot Wheels and Sizzlers cars to a "T"!!.

I have been mixing paint for automotive application for 20 years and when the paint dries....It's always worth it!!

The paint is already thinned so further thinning should not be necessary.

For best results the use of an airbrush works well.

When applying paint, very fine, thin coats are recommended as the paint will easily run and form droplets.

2-3 coats are usually enough to reach the desired coverage.
After the initial painting is done and paint has dried a final coat of clear polyurethane enamel will bring out the full translucent glow and to protect the finish.

The price is only $10.00 per bottle and you can re-coat approximately 20 cars (if you are careful) out of each bottle.

If you have any questions please feel free to call!
Thanks for trying Shades by Grove... and remember to "Think Pink"

    All Spectraflame Colors Available!
    Here are some samples:

Hot Pink ( the one you've just read about!)

      Anti-Freeze (shades easily)

      Oriental Blue (very light)

      Awesome Orange (like Sunkist)

      Brandy Wine (very deep red)

      Money Green (worth every penny)

Purple Passion (like a dark plum)

      Electric Blue (shocker hot!)

      Pearl White (almost see through)

Granite Gray (slightly on the smoky side)

Lemon Yellow (sweet as it is sour!)

Sassy Salmon (a slight of the hand in pink)

      Ragin' Red (like a firehouse!)

      Emerald Green (very green!)

      Orange Sherbet (yummy!)

Nightshade Black (dark of the night)

Sweet Silver (the ultimate base coat!)

Brawny Blacks (available in Flat, Semi-Gloss, and Gloss)

      More to come!

Editor's Note: I just purchased three bottles of Mike's paint. After using it, the following is my honest opinion.

    This paint is FANTASTIC!!
I tried the Awesome Orange and Electric Blue on two "stripped to bare metal" Redline Hot Wheels bodies.
I used my airbrush and effortlessly shot a few thin coats. The paint dried quickly, laid out smooth, and the gloss was OUTSTANDING! If I did not know any better, I would swear it was the original factory finish from the Sixties! Same color, same gloss, and same transparency! Like the Candy Apple paints of that era.

I then tried the water-based Hot Pink. With all the identical conditions as above. It dried quickly to a somewhat opaque dull flat pink. Nothing impressive about this. But, as Mike instructed, I shot it with a few thin coats of clear.(I prefer Testor's Boyd's High Gloss Clear) The pink was literally transformed! I should say it was electrified! It changed to a transparent glowing hot pink right before my eyes! I then compared it to my original Hot Pink Redline Whip Creamer, I defy anyone to tell me it is not the same color!

Do yourself a favor and quite trying to mix your own version.(I struggled for months doing this!)Buy your favorite color(s) from Mike! He has already done the measuring and mixing for you! It's easy, just pour some into the cup on your airbrush and start spraying! Don't believe me?

Mike's Collection of Gold Chrome and Silver Chrome Sizzlers.

Here's a story that ran in the Ft. Dodge Today Magazine:

Restoring and Racing Toy Cars Is One Hot Hobby

    By Deann Haden-Luke

For Fort Dodge native Mike Grove, cars and racing come as natural as breathing. One could even say these interests are instinctive, in his blood.

His grandfather Roger Grove and father Roger Grove Jr. are both well known auto mechanics and his father and two uncles teamed up to race.

"I grew up watching my dad race at the Humboldt drag strip and remember watching him on 'Wide World of Sports' on his way to becoming class champ.

I've been around cars since I was three or four, and can still remember first learning the name of a car part the piston, recalled Mike Grove.

These first impressions strengthen the nostalgia behind his present-day collection of Mattel Hot Wheels Sizzlers cars, the electrically powered 1/64 scale cars that were only produced from 1970 to 1978.

These plastic-molded cars run four to five minutes from a 90-second charge out of a 1970s-style gas pump. The pump holds four "D" sized batteries and is known as a Juice Machine, complete with a nozzle that inserts into the car's charging slot. These "toys" are capable of clocking 20 mph at times.

    The History

Even though his current Sizzlers collection numbers in the hundreds, as a child, Grove's one and only Sizzlers car came into his life on Christmas day.

He still has a clear vision of this fond childhood memory.

"I took my new car to my cousins' house, racing on their new track. I had such a good time little did I know that I was bitten by a bug and 20 years later it would bite again."

The "bite" was dormant while Grove moved to Fremont, Nebraska after high school to pursue a degree in heating and air conditioning. He began working for Nebraska Trane, where he still works today. He builds automation computers, which are installed in skyscrapers, by using his additional training in electronics and computer graphics to animate blue prints.

    The Hobby

The Sizzlers spark was rekindled in 1992. Grove read about Hot Wheels cars making a comeback and began traveling to toy shows to collect the cars.

"At one booth, a car caught my eye," he said, describing his Sizzlers re- encounter. "I turned it over and saw the battery power switch. It hit me. I had a flashback of my own single Sizzlers car. I had to have it."

That impulse started his collection. Grove recalls initially being able to buy a non-working Sizzlers car for $1.

Once, he even hit the jackpot and purchased 100 cars at one location.

His growing collection led Grove to start a small business restoring Sizzlers.

The spark became a flame as his hobby became the business known as Sizzlers Hotline.

"I advertised Sizzlers restoration in publications and the response was unbelievable. I was swamped," explained Grove, who restores an average of 2000 cars a year.

He began traveling to toy shows, offering rebuilt chassis (motor and battery parts) on the spot. With a new chassis, collectors could then immediately try out their cars at a racing challenge on the track continuously set up at Grove's booth.

With more people bit by the Sizzlers bug, the cars have now become more valuable, selling for $20 each, un-restored.

However, a restored car can go for as much as $200.

Grove's business fanned the Sizzlers spark into a roaring flame, fueled by nostalgic childhood memories.

Mike Grove witnessed the release of his book A Pictorial Guide to Sizzlers at the 1995 Hot Wheels Convention.
