Great American Favorite
Brand Name Cookbook,
Recommended by: Wendy
This cookbook has all kinds of great pictures, in color !!
and most of the recipes start from something that is already
prepared so they are easy too!
One of my favorites is this recipe for Reuben Chicken...
4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 can Bavarian style sauerkraut, well drained
4 thin sliced corned beef slices
4 slices Swiss Cheese
1 cup Thousand Island Dressing
Preheat oven to 375. Place chicken in a single layer in greased baking pan.
Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
Press excess liquid from sauerkraut; spoon over chicken.
Arrange corned beef and cheese slices over sauerkraut.
Pour dressing evenly over the top. Cover pan with aluminum foil.
Bake about 1 1/2 hours until chicken is tender.
Thousand Island Dressing
In a small bowl, combine one cup mayonnaise, 1/4 cup ketchup, 1/4 cup sweet pickle relish, 1 tablespoon chopped onion, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper; blend well.
Refrigerate leftover dressing for another use.
I like to serve this with a salad and dark bread.

French toast made with challah, and Lindy's legendary cheesecake.

The New Joy of Cooking
REVIEW:
Your grandmother probably had one, and your mother surely did. If you're a baby boomer, you grew up with the later editions, published from the 1960's tothe 1980's. And now there's a new one for all those Generation X'ers whonever learned how to cook.
That's right: It's the 13th edition of The Joy Of Cooking, the classic kitchen Bible that has been the standard cookbook and culinary reference for America's home cooks ever since Irma S. Rombauer wrote the first edition in 1931. This latest edition, published by Scribner in 1997, is the first major
revision of the book since 1975 and the most complete revamping of the book's contents ever attempted. Irma S. Rombauer, Marion Rombauer Becker and Ethan Becker are credited as the authors of this new Joy of Cooking Maria Guarnaschelli was the editor, and a whole slew of culinary experts received credit in the Acknowledgements. The book contains more than 2,500 revised and
new recipes and--at 1,136 pages--is considerably longer than previous editions.
Like it's predecessors, this new Joy Of Cooking is a goldmine of information. Of particular interest to chileheads is the new 9-page section on peppers in the chapter titled "Vegetables." It includes very good descriptions and line drawings of the kinds of fresh and dried peppers that are most commonly available in the United States. This section of the book also contains excellent instructions on how to roast and peel fresh peppers (several methods) and how to toast dried ones. It also has six
recipes in which peppers (from bells to jalapenos) are the main ingredient.
There's an entire chapter called "Condiments, Marinades & Dry & rubs," where you'll find recipes for Chili Sauce, Chili Oil, and several salsas. The new Joy Of Cooking is indeed a joy both to read and to cook from. It succeeds in its goal of updating this American classic to reflect the tastes of the nation as we near the 21st century. No kitchen should be without a copy of this new book. But just because you've bought the
latest one, don't discard those old editions of Joy Of Cooking. They'll become more valuable as the years go by. And they're great sources of information on how America's eating habits have changed during the past seven decades.

Louisianna Real & RusticBy: Emeril Legasse & Marcelle Bienvenue
Lu's Review:
I love watcing Emeril on FTVN and have all of his cookbooks to drool over. In preparation for our trip to
Louisianna, we decided to have a Creole Christmas instead of a Turkey.
Using his wonderful recipes.. this was a huge success !
From this book we made: For 1st course, Crab Chops.. lots of crab, not lots of filling and and excellent flavour.
Oyster Bacon Pie, which my step mom won't stop talking about, it was absolutely wonderful.. and very rich.
We served the Oyster Pie with Corn Maque Choux, and Baked Garlic Onions.
Needless to say we were stuffed, but after about an hours rest we still had room for Lu's Honey Pumpkin Pie.
This book rates a 10/10 for me. I have another 9 recipes flagged to try
in the near future.

The format has changed from her previous books, and it is wonderful. Hardbound, with 2 pretty ribbons to mark you spot, and COLOUR photos (tons of them) to give you presentation ideas. This one's a joy, and if you entertain alot, or just like looking at beautiful food you should think about getting it.

Master Chefs Cook Kosher By: Judy Zeidler, $17.47
Amazons review: Master Chefs Cook Kosher is a companion to Judy Zeidler's television show, Judy's Kitchen, which appears on the Jewish Television Network. The book features dishes prepared by chefs on the show. Each of the 31 sections of this book corresponds to an episode of the show, and each has a theme, such as the cooking of Provence, dishes made with potatoes, or a Tex-Mex menu.

The Perfect Recipe, Getting it Right Every Time By: Pam Anderson, $18.90
On Lu's Wish List
One Readers review: I am so pleased with this book. The recipes are fabulous, especially the buttermilk fried chicken, burgers, potato salad, banana muffins, chocolate cream pie, and the most dangerous brownies I've come across. I can hardly wait for
Thanksgiving, so I can try out Ms. Anderson's brining method for the most moist, flavorful turkey. She also has such an engaging writing style that I've enjoyed reading this book as much as cooking from it. Great recipes, great tips, and great reading in one book--you can't beat it.

Sable & Rosenfeld Cookbook
Lu's Review:
I got given this as a gift and it's wonderful! I've tried many many of the recipes with great success and I've got splatters of all sorts on the pages (always a sure sign that I like a cook book!
Tired of shake and bake chicken? Try the Chicken in Almond Crust with cream sauce.
Bored of those regular cream cheese dips you always get at parties? Try the wonderful Liptauer recipe.
Sable and Rosenfeld offer up good food with a twist.
None of the recipes are too long, and all of the ingredients are either already found in your pantry or can easily be found at the grocery store...nothing too obscure has been included which I like.
This cookbook definitely gets 5 stars from Lu, and I keep looking for a second volume.
Amazon.com sells Sable & Rosenfeld Cookbook for $15.95. At time of review the book was on back-order, but it's definitely worth the wait.

Simple Menus for the Bento Box By: Ellen Greaves, $17.50
This book is nothing less than lovely. It would make a splendid gift, especially if you added several small and unique bowls or plates. This is one of the most unusual and innovative books I have purchased in a long time. The book even supplies sources for obtaining bento boxes and accessories.
The bento box is a lacquered square divided into four compartments. Japanese cooks use the bento box for serving carefully orchestrated, beautifully arranged meals composed of four dishes. The recipes are not traditionally Japanese and they are simple to make and most require familiar ingredients.
The recipes are seasonal: the fall menu consists of Arugula Salad with Parmesan and Pickled Shiitake Mushrooms; Ratatouille; Pasta with Raw Tomatoes; and Poached Shrimp with Beans, Celery, and Saffron. There is a Mediterranean influence in Greaves's and Nish's cooking.

Simply Scones

The tender Scottish biscuits are appearing in bakeries and restaurants everywhere. This book features recipes for classic scones or dozens of sweet and savory varieties. Illustrated.

Uncommon Gourmet's All-Occasion Cookbook By: Ellen Helman, $15.16
Lu's Review: I just bought this book and already have marked off 15 recipes that I just MUST try.
It is sure to be one of those that ends up spattered with stains from being used so often. Full of innovative and delicious sounding recipes that don't have too many ingredients or ridiculously difficult instructions. Rarely have I found a book that contains so many recipes that I want to try.. not the standard 2 or 3 that you usually like, I'd happily try all 400 recipes in this cookbook.
