Vesna's Virtual Gallery

Artist's Statement, 1997

I find that my art wants me to ponder the puzzling nature of violence and tenderness in us. My paintings about Culture on one hand and War on the other hand, pushed me into the world of information, decoding and probing the line between authenticity and selective memory.

I find myself untangling the complexities between cultural history - a familiar and comfortable shell - and political history - an unfamiliar and dangerous game.
The realness of my painting grows from the tension created between a personal image and the sense of absurdity of modern existence.

At the moment the question for me is - how to visually speak of rebuilding oneself after barbaric violence and damage have taken place - in the visual language of a gentle and civilized human activity - painting.
