A STORY WE ALL KNOW - by June Underwood
She was walking home one day with her best friend from the record shop.
It was only a mile away from home and were happinly singing along doing the
bop.
Teasing one another because their feet were getting mighty sore.
Put their thumbs out for a ride and laughed all the more.
They were surprised when a car stopped and recognized the man.
It was sis's steady boy friend so they accepted a ride just then.
"Turn here," she said and was surprised they went by the turn.
The girls looked at one another with eyes that held a look of concern.
The car never stopped not even at the signal light.
It ran right through into the park beneath tall trees where it was dark.
As soon as the car stopped the girls tried to runaway real fast.
But those who were waiting grabbed them within the darkness.
Screaming, kicking and crying they were scared for their life.
Not knowing what these guys wanted getting away wwas their plight.
She could not find her sister's boyfriend who brought them here.
Crying because these guy's really scared her.
They asked questions she did not understand, like sex, intercourse and
condom.
What did they means and what did they want?
"Where is Dee" she shouted not knowing what happened to her friend.
She felt her body weighed down to the dirt and pinned to the ground.
Leaves and dirt scattered everywhere then seeing leathered arms here and
there.
Beginning to cry when a piercing pain ran through her body.
She didn't know what happened then her mind became so cloudy.
When she woke up bright lights were everywhere to be seen.
She felt her body lifted up by men in white linen.
A siren was heard as she fell into a deep, dreamless, dark sleep.
"How are you, Dear?" Mama asked as she smiled down at me.
Then realized she was in the hospital beneath clean white sheets.
Fear rolled over up into her mind as she saw Mama smile.
"I'm Ok," she said through the pain that raced through her body all the
while.
"Reverend Giles is here to see you. Do you mind?" Mama asked.
She shook her head 'no' wondering what he wanted.
"Do you remember what happened? Can you tell us what you saw?"
She listened to his questions to the wonder of it all.
Not knowing how to answer because she did not understand.
All she felt was pain and aching in her body in agony.
She smiled when Sis came in to sit down by her side.
"It's good to see you. Are you sure you will alright?"
Smiling at Sis she said, "I'll be Ok," through all her pain.
Wondering when it would all be over and become normal again.
"Why did you get in the car with him?" Sis asked wondering.
"He's your boyfriend" she said, "I knew I could trust in him."
"We broke up three months ago," Sis said with a question on her face.
Sis never thought to let her know and felt a bit afraid.
"Was it because I didn't spend more time talking to my little sister I let
this happen?" Sis kept saying to herself over and over again.
Note: Dee got away and called the police and the police called for an
ambulance. The rapists were apprehended, indicted and jailed for statutory
rape. And the girl still carried the scars of her youth...she sighed and
turned away in sadness.
