The Andre Grandier's Shrine

General Jarjayes is notified of what Oscar has done. He is full of shame and anger. He can not bear the embarassment and he decides to punish Oscar with his own hands for what she has done.

Later that evening when Oscar and Andre arrive home, Nanny tells her that is urgent for General Jarjayes to talk to her, and she goes to see him. Nanny asks Andre what is going on because General Jarjayes is very upset, but Andre tells her that she shouldn't worry, and that everything is fine.

When Oscar arrives at her father's room, General Jarjayes asks her to sit down.

"Are you ready for your punishment?"

"What are you talking about?"

"You'll be forced to return your badges and you'll be degradated!"

"Once again father, what are you talking about?"

General Jarjayes draws out his sword.

"Although you're a revel, I'd listen because you are my daughter."

"Father . . . 12 of my subordiantes are in prison. If I could give my life to save them, I would but I know they won't accept it. So . . . there's no reason why I should die in this instant!"

General Jarjayes lifts his sword up in the air. As he is about to kill Oscar, Andre comes in and grabs General Jarjayes' arm and he pushes him by the window. As they struggled with each other, the lights go off:

"I won't leave! You tried to assasinate your own daughter! I won't leave!"

Then, Andre pulls out a gun and aims it at General Jarjayes. Oscar watches in astonishment what is happening before her eyes. Once again Andre is risking his lfe to save her.

"How dare you do something like this to me!"

"If you try to do something, I'll shoot you and then I'll escape with Oscar!"

"What! you want to escape with Oscar! So that's how you feel now!"

"Yes . . ."

"Stupid! You think the difference between you and Oscar would disappear just because you want it so. Don't you understand she's from the nobility and when a member of the nobility wants to get married, he has to ask permission from the king . . ."

"Yes, but when the king loves someone, he doesn't have to ask permission to anyone!"

"Impertinent! I'll never forgive you!"

Then General Jarjayes slaps Andre. Nanny watches in shock and begins to cry. As Andre kneels down before him, he puts down his gun and . . .

"Sir, if you must kills us . . . please begin with me because I couldn't bare seeing how you 'd kill someone I love so dearly."

"Andre . . ." Oscar cries.

"Allright, I'll do what you ask for!"

As General Jarjayes lifts his sword up, Andre looks at him with a firm look in his eyes. He is so strong and noble: once again willing to offer his life to save Oscar's. But right at that moment, a messenger arrives from Versailles.

He brings news from the Queen in which she forgives Oscar for what she has done, and she expects more loyalty from the family in the future. No one can't believe it. They have escaped from the hands of death, but what is to become of them?

Meanwhile, at the prison, Oscar's subordiantes are notified that they would be executed within five days. But Oscar is not going to give up so easily.

She meets with Bernard Chatelet at a tavern, and she asks for his help in order to liberate her subordinates. He agrees to help under the condition that Oscar would assure him that no one would be hurt.

He calls out a massive number of people and they gather in front of the prison. Fortunately, the soldiers were liberated. This was a result of the power of the people.

Oscar sits at her desk, remembering her recent visit to the Queen:

Oscar visited Marie Antoniette to thank her for saving her life. They have been friends for more than twenty years -- Oscar is 34 years old by now. Marie Antoniette takes this opportunity to inform Oscar that she has ordered that all troops from all over the country to come to Paris. She fears a revolution is closed, and asks Oscar for her protection for when that time comes.

In the other hand, Oscar's health seems to get worst: everytime she coughs, she vomits blood. That same afternoon, Andre reports to Oscar's office to remind her of their patrol.

When he comes inside her office, he sees Oscar coughing.

"It's nothing Andre, I just have some fever. Please ask Alain to be in charge of the patrol today."

Andre follows Oscar's orders, but he suspects that it may be more than just a little cold.

Because of her condition, Oscar has decided to have her painting done. Her father and Nanny are very much surprised of her decision because all her life she had refused to have it done.

The painter decides to leave when he sees how tired and sad Oscar looks. Just as he leaves, Andre returns from the barracks. When he gets to Oscar's room, Andre finds her standing in the balcony: the wind blows her beatiful blonde hair. She asks him how is everything in Paris, and he tells her that freedom has disappeared. More troops have arrived and there's is a greater shortage of food. Then, Andre:

"Oscar, what secret are you hiding from me? Why don't you tell me?"

Oscar is surprised by his question: "Nothing in particular."

"Although I'm blind in one eye, I can still see what happens around me, and I know something is happening to you. Tell me."

Oscar turns around and once again she walks away: "I'll return to Paris tomorow." Then she leaves the room. I can only imagine how Andre must be feeling, it may seem to him that Oscar doesn't trust him anymore but I know she doesn't tell him anything because she doesn't want to worry him.

The beginning of the end is very close. The people more than ever are ready to fight for their rights, even at the cost of a revolution.

Because of all this, Oscar visits Marie Antoniette once again and asks her to please send back all the troops to where they came from to avoid more uprisings and violence. But Marie Antoniette tells her that she can not do that. Once again, the wall of the Queen of France, which drew von Fersen back to Sweeden, draws Oscar away.

"Oscar I'm relying on you for when the time comes, you shall protect me."

"Your majesty, I've renounced to my position in the military . . ."

Then, with tears in their eyes, Oscar and Marie Antoniette say "Au revoir!" They would never see each other again.
