Midwestern artist discovers similarities between modern art and folk art in an exhibition of paintings for a Master of Fine Arts Exhibit in the Art Department Gallery, 7th floor of the Humanities Building. University of Wisconsin-Madison, 455 North Park Street, Madison, WI, December 11-16, 1993.
Artist Keith Fox blends the arts of painting, quilting, storytelling, and cartooning in his Master of Fine Arts Exhibition that he has titled "The Arachne Exhibition of Web Paintings." The artist says in his artist's statement, "As a rural artist of mixed ethnicities, who grew up in a small farming commnunity, I enjoy experimenting with rural American folk art and 20th century modern art in a way that I hope will delight people." To bring clarity to his colorful paintings, the artist titles them after heroic and tragic figures in Greek mythology. In this particular exhibit, he draws upon the Greek myth of Arachne. As legend has it, the Greek goddess Athena transformed Arachne, a maiden loomer, into a spider for thinking that she could weave better than the goddess Athena herself.
Keith Fox was born in rural southwestern Minnesota in 1963. He graduated from high school in 1982 and attended Carleton College for 2 years in Northfield, Minnesota. In 1985, he transfered to the University of Nebraska-Omaha and graduated in 1988, with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work. Soon after, he moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1991 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has continued his studies there as a graduate student in art, focusing primarily on painting and secondarily on drawing and printmaking. After he graduates from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he will move to Athens, Georgia.
The exhibit will take place in the Art Department Gallery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from Saturday, December 11 to Thursday, December 16, 1993. An informal-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, December 11, 1993, at 8:00 p.m. The gallery is also scheduled to be open Sunday afternoon and during regular business hours Monday through Thrusday.
