            Reflections on a January Afternoon

            It is over-
This life that melts beneath these boots,
holding wet snow in the holes
            where my socks seep through-
The sun for all its power
            is powerless to help;
it can not reach me here in the heart
where life is cold and broken like frozen glass,
shattered into bits and pieces of memory-
I am lost now, entering the darkness,
            alone and without the hands
            I touched along the way-
Only music can save me, but I have grown deaf
to all notes, hearing only in discord,
            broken melodies of better times.
            Where are they now, friends,lovers,
all who claimed my soul so many years ago
when life was a cocktail on the evening porch,
            a summer sun painting prisms
            through the ice-chilled glass-
