            Thanksgiving 1998

            This family day,alone.
            No friends either,
            For that matter;
            Only the black cable lines
            Waving up and down
            Against the stiff northwest wind
            Catch my disinterest.
            Off the dunes, the high-tide beach
            Receives the turbulent surf,
            Wave upon foaming wave
            Thudding their force, echoing
            My desperate heart-
            Whose life is this that scans
            The endless stretch of sea,
            Licking the cold rain,
            Still hoping for a sign,
            Some hint of gratuity on this day
            When everywhere people gather
            In thankfulness!
