Cannon Collecting

Antique cannon hold a certain fascination for many people. These historical artifacts were used to save lives, signal mariners, salute VIP's, and of course to destroy during wartime. Some of them have stories to tell. In this web page, we'll give you a look into our unusual hobby, and some of the cannon, related collectibles, and cannon firing activities.

Left: 42mm English Maxim-Nordenfelt rapid-fire naval gun, made in 1896. It fired two-pound explosive or armor-piercing shells.

Above: This 1728 German paper describes Braunschweig's 9-ton bronze bombard., "die faule Mette".

North-South Skirmish Association members firing Civil War mortars and reproductions of them at Fort Shenandoah VA 10/98. Crews fire ten shots in one hour at a post 100 yards downrange. Distance from each ball to the post is added and low score wins. Crew of piece on right achieved remarkable score of 12 foot total for ten shots.
