A Hobo's Heart

To me, a hobo's heart is a mindset, an attitude.
Unquenchable curiousity, a chronic itch to go out and discover
what is beyond your own backyard.
It is a breathless anticipation of what might be
just around the corner of life's road.

We can work to lay a foundation, a legacy, to create a heritage.
With posterity in mind, we may be motivated to do what we do.
Simply carry out our vocation
with the intention of giving
a gift to the next generation.

If you set out into your world with a hobo's heart
your world instinctively grows larger.
And you will be growing also.
Encountering challenges along your way,
strength will grow inside of you.
Adjusting your route in response to your particular circumstances,
you will grow more flexible.

When you learn, along the way, to treat adversity as an adventure,
you will grow more hopeful, less frightened, better equipped to cope
with what life throws your direction.

The habit of following a twisting road, of walking with the spirit of excitement and anticipation
of rolling with the punches, and stepping around the rocks
all these are important skills for carrying you safely through your life.

No matter what, surprises will come.
The unexpected will happen
but if you are living with anticipation,
making room for the unexpected,
you will know the joy of the road.

Become a hobo.
A traveler,
not a refugee.
Thus you will be moving forward, not just moving along.

LAURA

There is pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes
By the deep sea, and music in it's roar.
I love not man the less, but nature more.
Lord Byron

Kindness co$ts nothing.

"I make the gladdest thing under the sun!
I will touch a hundred flowers and not pick one."
Afternoon on a Hill (1917)
