Our Lahr Senior High Friends of the Past

Changes last made on: November 16, 2006

This memorial page is an unfortunate but important part of reminiscing and embracing our past. We would be remiss if we did not pay tribute to our treasured friends who have passed away. While losing friends is a sad reality, our fond memories will hold them forever in our hearts.

Below are memories and photos of Lahr Senior High students and friends submitted by their families.

DARRIN LEO BOYD
May 11 1966-Sept 12 1998
Time spent in Lahr: 1978-1981

Submitted by sister Rhonda Adams at RJWH413@cs.com

My fondest memory of my older brother, while living in Germany was skiing with him at Feldberg. Living in Germany was one of Darrin's greatest loves, only one thing in life replaced that love and that was serving his country. Darrin enlisted as soon as he turned 18. After being in the military for 10 years Darrin became interested in medicine. For the last three years of his military career he served as a medic.

He was sent to Bosnia for 6 months in 1996. Within the next year he was sent to Rwanda for another 6 months. Sometime in the spring of 1998, he began reliving some of the terrible things he witnessed while serving in Rwanda and was subsequently diagnosed with PTSD (better known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). His family believes that Darrin's disorder was a direct result of the trauma he experienced while serving in Rwanda. This belief was also shared by his close friends and coworkers. Before the military or family members could help him, he sadly took his own life.

Darrin always had fond memories of living in Germany and of the many friends he made over there. He will never be forgotten, and our family will never be the same without him.

Darrin is survived by his Mother Shirley Boyd, Father MWO (ret) Leo Boyd, Sister Rhonda Adams (Boyd), Brother Jason Boyd, a niece, two nephews and many extended family members and friends. He is missed terribly.

BRIAN JAMES ALLEN WILKINS
Passed Away: September 21, 2003
Submitted by: brother Dave Wilkins

Lahr 1971-76
Brian Wilkins died suddenly at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital on September 21, 2003 at the young age of 43. He is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine, two sons, Jeff of Bracebridge & Eric of New Brunswick, daughter in laws Heather and Alicia, granddaughter, Jessica, parents, Jim & Audrey Wilkins of Sydenham, brother, David Wilkins, sister Susan Ungar and her husband, Bob, nephews Garrett, Sean, Alex, and Mitchell all of Kingston.

Also left to mourn the loss is mother-in-law, Anastasia Maika, sisters in law, Pat & Cheryl, brother in law Rob, and niece Stephanie all of Pickering.

Brian was raised in a military family that found themselves posted in places like Germany, Borden, and Kingston. When he became a father, he followed family tradition by joining the military himself. He joined Correctional Services Canada and worked at Kingston Penitentiary for a number of years until transferring to the Muskoka area to work at Beaver Creek Institution. It was there that he met and fell in love with Lorraine who would become his wife for a brief four years. His sons Jeff & Eric also moved to Muskoka to be with their dad, and he couldn’t have been happier or prouder. He enjoyed fishing, playing a friendly round of golf, curling, and building. His favourite times were with family and friends.

He will forever be remembered for his kind face, his love of laughter, love of children, and so much more. He remains forever in our hearts.

As expressions of sympathy donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or Sick Children’s Hospital.
