I enlisted in the United States Navy in June, 1982 and attended boot camp in San Diego, CA. Upon graduation, I completed the Basic Electricity and Electronics training and Radioman "A" school, both also located in San Diego. I then moved to Groton, CT. where I attended the Basic Enlisted Submarine School (BESS), Submarine Electronics Technical Training School (SETTS), and Radioman "C" school.
My first submarine was the USS Queenfish (SSN 651), home ported in Pearl Harbor, HI. I served onboard her from 1984 to 1988, completing two Western Pacific deployments, one North Pole deployment and other numerous operations and exercises. After my first reenlistment, I reported to the Naval Submarine Training Center Pacific (NSTCP), also located in Pearl Harbor, for instructor duty. As an instructor I taught various submarine communications combined maintenance courses. In addition, I earned the Master Training Specialist award in 1990 for outstanding performance as an instructor.
In December, 1990 I was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program (ECP) and subsequently attended the Naval Science Institute in Newport, RI during the summer of '91. After completion, I married the former Tracy Lilly of Edmonds, WA. My wife and I then reported to Naval Reserve Officer Training Center (NROTC), at Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR. I graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Business (Management Information Systems) and was commissioned as an Ensign 1610 (Cryptology).
As a Cryptologist, my first assignment was Naval Security Group Activity, Misawa Japan, Direct Support (DIRSUP). During my three year tour I completed nine DIRSUP trips throughout the Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, South China Sea and Arabian Gulf to include duties as Submarine Division Officer, Surface Division Officer and Command and Control Warfare (C2W) Division Officer. Additionally, I qualfied as Watch Officer for the Misawa Cryptologic Operations Center (MCOC).
In 1997 I reported to the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. My wife and I were blessed with our first daughter, Katherine Jayne Lewis, October 3rd of that year. I graduated in March, 1999 with a Masters of Computer Science with an emphasis in Networking and Database systems.
I then reported onboard the USS FIFE (DD-991) in August, 1999 homeported in Everett, WA. Shortly after, my wife and I were once again blessed with our second daughter, Emily Parker Lewis, on 28 Sep, 1999. I completed a successful tour onboard USS FIFE (DD 991) in July, 2001, where I was the OUTBOARD Officer, Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO), Assistant Safety Officer and the Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) Officer.
Tracy, Katie, Emily and I then reported to Naval Security Group Activity (NSGA) Medina (San Antonio, Texas) in summer 2001 where I assumed the duties as the N9 Department Head and Director, Target Development Center. On 31 August, 2004 I retired from the United States Navy as a Lieutenant Commander/O-4 with over 22 years of honorable service.
Upon retirement I was employed by Scitor Corporation as a government contractor working at United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, NE. as a Program Manager/Senior Analyst for a National Security, Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD). In February 2006 I relocated my family to Tri-cities Washington where I was employed by Battelle Memorial Institute (BMI) at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) as a scientist in the National Security Directorate. In October 2007 I accepted a position with MacAulay Brown (MacB) in San Antonio, TX as a Senior Program Manager.
