MY IRAN PHOTO ALBUM

By C.S.
PHOTOGRAPHING IRAN:
I traveled to Iran in Sept. 1999 & visited Tehran, Mashhad and Isfahan. I didn't encounter any problems taking pictures -generally, people's reactions ranged from indifference to curiosity & outright enthusiasm. Of course, I observed some basic, common-sense rules: I didn't rudely stick my camera into people's faces, I didn't take pictures of airports and other government buildings, and I didn't take pictures of private property or inside religious shrines (except in Isfahan, where photography inside the mosques is permitted.)
The only place where I encountered a problem with taking photographs was at the Capital Computer Complex in Tehran on Mirdamad street, which is essentially a large building full of computer and electronics stores. While taking some photos of the displays of the various computer stores, a guard informed me that photography inside the building required a permit from the management, due to the threat of burglary. Although the building was open to the public, it was still technically private property, and there was no sign explicitly stating this policy. Lesson: always ask permission beforehand, if you can.
I should also mention that my experience with Iran Air was quite positive - the level of service on both domestic and international flights compared favourably with any major Western airline.

P.S. - there were more pictures of girls but they didn't come out. I'm not a professional photographer, after all . . .
