War of 1812
In 1810 Gen. Sir Isaac Brock was placed in command of the British garrison in Upper Canada (now Ontario Province). One year later he was promoted to major general. After the outbreak of the War of 1812, he and the Indian chief Tecumseh led a combined force against an American army under Gen. William Hull. On Aug. 16, 1812, Brock surrounded the city of Detroit and compelled Hull to surrender. For this victory he was knighted by King George III. Brock was mortally wounded at the Battle of Queenston, Ont., on Oct. 13, 1812, but his troops carried the day.
