The water purifier is somthing that should be
carried by every squad in the Army. Most easily fit
in a buttpack, and some are self cleaning for an
infinite life. The Army does have some hand held models,
but they are not widely available. Recommended purifiers/
filters are made by: Katadyne, First Need, MSR, and PUR.
Costs range from $50-$250. Cheaper models need to
have their filters replaced from time to time, and will
make most, but not all water pottable. Pictured is the
MSR Waterworks II. At $125, I believe you get the
most bang for the buck with this model. If you buy,
be aware if the model is a filter, purifier, or both
and what it will defeat.
Until the Army solves the
soldiers load; space is at a premium in your ruck. To save space
, consider getting compression bags that most soldiers in AK
already use. The bags will compress any textile item by atleast
30%, usually %50. Use them for your socks, extra BDU's, etc...
Many manufacturers make them, and they range in many different
sizes. Price: $10-$35. Pictured are sacks made by Granite
Gear.
The standard Army Snaplink, is adequate, but it has an open
gate and it's alluminum. When safety is of paramount concern, consider
purchasing a steel, locking gate carabeener(snap link). Remember,
sometimes an open gate snaplink is better for rapid egress of the
rope. Prices range from $8-$20. Pictured is the Stubai 85.
