Skeletons in the Family Closet

When all of the extended family gets together for a holiday celebration it is surprising the  secrets that are let slip! I had a huge shock this past Christmas. Most upsetting!

My Aunt and Uncle on my mother's side come to visit us a lot. Nice people, though I have always sensed something a little wrong in the situation. They would talk a lot about Mascha and Cassi as if these were their kids or puppies but they never brought them along. Not that I would ever have commented on it...I know that not everyone has my highly developed sense of pack loyalty.

Well this visit, my Aunt Gay brought along pictures of Mascha and Cassi. A picture is  not as good as the real thing but still it is better than nothing so I was super keen on finally seeing my cousins. Was I in for a shock. Let me show you why.

Do you see my concern? Seemed to me there was something seriously wrong in our family. No wonder these two are kept hidden at home. We would not want to flaunt a relationship like this.

I was really upset! My first instinct was deny any possible kinship. That was easy in Cassi's case.....I mean do I bear any resemblance at all to THIS?!

But with Mascha it was not so easy. Did you notice the colouring, the thunky body build, and the regal pose? I had to admit there were some family resemblances.

Here she is bouncing off the walls.  It reminds me all too much of our own Bella!  But a CAT?!?  In my own family?!!    I was utterly ashamed and humiliated!

I was so upset I went and hid on the heat grate under the kitchen nook. How was I ever going to show my face in public again?

I cannot tell you how relieved I was when my mum, noticing my distress explained that since Cassi and Mascha were adopted and I was stolen there is actually no blood relationship between us. Thank goodness! I mean I had been led to understand I was a pure bred dog! Whatever would the owners of all my puppies have thought if they had found abberations like this in our bloodline?! Mum says that Mascha looks like a catty version of me because mum is my aunt's sister and they both have the same good taste and can pick the best looking coat colours and shapliest builds any day.  That makes good sense when you think about it.
