Cosmo is a Green-Nape Lory.  In 1998 we stopped by a local bird store, Birds of the World, in Mesa.  Our intentions were to just look around and kill a few hours.  Well, we killed our pocketbooks?
We saw this beautiful little bird, not having a clue what a Lory was or anything.  Brenda, the storeowner had as educated as possible before leaving that evening.  I want to add that she triple checked to ensure that we would be the right parents for this lovely creature.  There are many many bright and beautiful species, some wonderful talkers, and some perfect little clowns.  They are wonderful companions.  (*WARNING - ONE IS NOT ENOUGH. IT BECOMES A FEVER YOU CANNOT CONTROL)

Lories are a brush tongue parrot who requires a special diet.  They cannot survive on a diet based upon seed.
Many people find them undesirable because of their runny poop, but we think otherwise.  Additional information on the diets they require can be found by visiting a website that Loryworld@e-groups.com has set up.  You'll also see some of the different species of Lories.    Please visit this site, if you're the least bit interested in Lories.

It has been discovered that Lories are highly susceptible to Iron Overdose Disease or Iron Storage Disease.  Many of the Lory owners throughout the world have united in finding ways to reduce the amounts of iron found in commercial Lory Diets.  To find out more about this disease, please visit the website listed above or speak with Dr. Simmons.  He is known throughout the Lory Community as the authority on this subject.

When we first brought this little Green-nape home, we discovered it's ability to act like a clown, and had no problem coming up with the perfect name - Cosmo - from the Seinfeld sitcom.  In our hearts we just knew we had a little boy.  How could a girl-baby act this way?  As time went on, we began to notice a few little changes in our Cosmo.  Cosmo had become very attached to Jason.  Throwing fits whenever Jason left the room was only the beginning.  It soon got to a point where Jason was the only person who could have any interaction with Cosmo at all.  Then, towards the beginning of the New Year (2000) we began to notice Cosmo putting on weight.  This really concerned us as the poor baby kept getting bigger and bigger. So we scheduled an appointment to have the Lories annual checkup and get them microchipped.  One week before the Vet visit we discovered a tiny little broken egg.  Our Cosmo, it seems, is not a boy after all.
And I'm happy to report that since the egg-laying incident my oldest little one has become nice again.  I've even managed to get a few quick kisses in once in awhile.
