I love the Appaloosa breed, thanks to my Appy, The Gusto. If you would like any information on the Appaloosa breed, please go to the ApHC's webpage. They have information on all kinds of Appaloosa related things, the club, merchandise, programs, special events, registration etc. I have found them very helpful in researching pedigrees, I'm sure they would be glad to help you out too! You can also check out the Appaloosa Journal online, it has some great features also!

My favorite book on the Appaloosa breed is the book, Appaloosa Spirit, by Audrey Pavia.(some of the images on this page are from the book.) Included in the book are many beautiful pictures by Bob Langrish. Appaloosa Spirit is a great book because it explains the heritage of the breed and how cherished this breed was (and still is) by the Nez Perce. I recommend it to any Appaloosa enthusiast. It is a great coffee table book!!

*The Appaloosa breed is characterized by mottled skin, striped hooves, white sclera, and, of course, spots in all different patterns. Foundation Appaloosas have short, thin manes and tails and strong hooves. Appaloosas are versatile horses that can excel in any discipline. Most noted for their strength in ranch and cattle work, they are also gaining appreciation as dreesage and jumping horses.*

The Nez Perce were the ones responsible for making the Appaloosa what it is. They found these horses to their liking because of their great ability in battle as well as hunting buffalo. Their Appaloosas were trained to knock off enemys from their mount and pound at them with their hooves and tear at them with their teeth, yet they would be cared for by a young child when it returned to the village. When the Nez Perce and the Americans waged war, the American cavalry knew they had no chance overtaking the Nez Perce because of their great horses. The American cavalry had to outnumber them to conquer them. After overtaking the Nez Perce, the Americans sought to destroy the Nez Perce's horses, hoping to destroy the hopes of the people. Luckily some Appaloosas were able to escape and roam the countryside. Ranchers in the area found some of the horses and bred them to their mares, hoping for the abilities of the breed to be passed on. All this was done secretly, because it was not until the 1960's when an article was written on the breed that a group of three men got together and started the present day Appaloosa Horse Club.

Another good book that I happened to come across was Appaloosa: The Spotted Horse in Art and History, by Francis Haines. While this book was written in 1963,it has excellent pictures of the Appaloosa on cave walls and Chinese art, as well as famous Appaloosa spotted horses in history. Did you know that in the original herd of Lippizans there were quite a few spotted horses? What about the fact that in ancient Chinese art there were many horses that resemble present day Appaloosas?
