Sweet Nectar Marigolds. In times past, people have insisted that they keep harmful insects out of the vegetable garden. In recent history, experts have stated that this claim is not valid. So, do they help, or do they not? Well, I'll tell ya: I don't know.
What I do know is that marigolds attract hummingbirds! I used to have a little vegetable garden on the top of a very small hill. When I first put it in, I planted a single row of French marigolds around its outside edge. After a few years, those flowers had cascaded down the sides of the hill, and the effect was gorgeous! They endlessly delighted me, year after year, even when my veggies didn't do so well! Then, one day, I noticed a small, emerald flicker of light darting in and out among the marigolds. I thought, "We don't live in the mountains. How could that be a hummingbird?" Well, shortly, as I watched in amazement, another "flickering emerald" joined the first.
