Iva MAJOLI

Iva Majoli had eeriness with Monica Seles, as they both come from the former Yugoslavia and they both died their hair blonde. They both came to Nick Bollettieri's Academy in the USA, as young prodigies. Majoli and Seles both play similarly, both have powerful ground strokes as they are attacking baseliners. Their practice methods are identical, as they are prepared to hit with a basket of balls for hours.

Majoli is friends with many players including Mary Pierce and Anke Huber. At the tournament in Hamburg, Mary and Iva had dinner after the final which Iva won. Mary supported Iva in the final of the French Open.

Majoli and Dragomir show great sportsmanship at the end of their French Open Quarter final match, by laying beside each other on the clay courts in exhaustion. Dragomir helps Majoli to her feet as they walk together with their arms around each other to shake the umpire's hand. They are doubles partners and realise that they still can be friends after the match.

Iva Majoli produces terrific groundstrokes, with power and topspin. Her major improvement to her game is her volleys in which she has practised in doubles matches. She has moderate success with doubles. Her second serve is a weakness, particularly in tight situations.

1998

Majoli beat Lucic at the Australian Open in the second round, but she failed for the second year in a row, with a third round loss. Her form has been poor throughout the year. Majoli defeated Zvereva and Martinez to reach the Quarter finals of the French Open, where she lost a re-match to Davenport. Majoli fell in the second round to Tauziat, finalist this year, at Wimbledon. She lost to Hingis four times, Tokyo, Rome, Los Angeles (on Iva's Birthday) and finally at the US Open. At the US Open, Iva had the toughest draw, defeating Huber 6-3 6-3 and losing to Hingis in the second round.

1997

Majoli won her first slam title by thrashing Hingis 6-4 6-2 in the French Open. In the final, Hingis used all her gamesmanship by taking an injury time out and a bathroom break to try to break Majoli's rhythm. The loss, cost Hingis the Grand Slam and many people incorrectly think she would have won if she had better preparation. Majoli would easily beaten Hingis that day even if she was at her best. Majoli trailed Davenport 7-5 4-0 before she won 5-7 6-4 6-2. Against her doubles partner Majoli beat Dragomir 6-3 5-7 6-2. She had a bad head cold before her tense semi final against Coetzer 4-6 6-3 7-5 in which she came from a break behind in the 3rd set to win. She also won the tournaments in Hannover (coming back from match point to beat Novotna) and Hamburg, and reached the Quarter final at Wimbledon. However, she was very inconsistent in losing several first round matches.

1996

Majoli beats Seles and Hingis in Tokyo to reach the final after losing to Seles in the Quarter Finals at the Australian Open. She also reached the Quarter Finals at the French Open, fourth round at the US Open after boycotting Wimbledon.

1995

Majoli won three tournaments at the end of the year. She reached the Quarter finals of the French Open, beating Pierce along the way.

1994

Majoli reached the round of 16 of the French and US Open, losing to Gorrechatagui and Pierce.

1993

Majoli aged 15 beat 13-Hack to reach the round of 16 at the French Open. She came the closet she has ever to beating Graf, losing 6-4 7-6. She fell to Novotna at the US Open in the second round.
