The purpose of Queer Montclair (also known as "Out in Essex") is to serve as an electronic focal point and information exchange for Montclair's LGBT community and their friends and families.
It is QM's aim to publicize the Township and its surrounding area, to provide community members with news and events of interest, to serve as a sounding board for community sentiments and to publish and promote the views and interests of - and the personalities comprising - the community.
Founded as an organization in November 1998, it quickly became apparent that in a metropolitan area saturated with LGBT organizations, the need of our citizens in suburban Montclair would be best met in an "alternative" fashion, which need QM hopes to help fulfill.

Montclair has long been known as a haven for diversity, a community not only tolerant of difference, but one that actually celebrates human variety. Known as a safe place, wherein those more committed to individualism, integrity and the things of the spirit than to social convention could lead pleasant and productive lives, the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered ("queer") community in Montclair has grown over the past decade in influence, stature and self-confidence.
Today a host of activities for LGBT folk abound in the township, and cater to the interests of LGBT parents, high school and university students, political and community activists, professionals, religious believers and spiritual seekers, and artists among others.
