"Growing Christmas Trees in Nova Scotia"

"Thinning"

I am going to tell you the way I grow Christmas Trees. Maybe everyone doesn't agree with my style. If so, feel free to show me what I am doing wrong.I have had the best results with natural stands although I have tried planting a few thousand trees, so it will be natural stands I will be showing. The picture on the left shows an area that has been clear cut a few years ago.I will go in to this area and cut all the hardwood, spruce etc. leaving only the balsam fir. We then thin out the balsam fir, leaving trees with nice foilage and good whirls, thinning trees that they have room for at least a year's growth, butt prune all trees up to a good whirl, shape any tree that is needed to be shaped. This depends on how close the trees are when you start thinning.(if they are very close they should be left a year to get over the shock of thinning). The following year you thin again, shape trees and shear trees 4' or more in height. Yearly thinning should produce a good percentage of table tops. Watch your small trees as these are your future crop.(It is a lot easier to know what to do than to actually do it).

"Shearing"

"Christmas Trees"

Christmas tree production is a lot of hard work from the start, from preparing the site till the trees are ready for market, but for someone who enjoys working in the great outdoors the results are rewarding, not as much financially but the challenge it brings.A good site to visit is Christmas tree production from natural stands

This guy will get you if you try stealing my Christmas Trees.
